Ive seacrhed around the net for a few days now, but Ive had no luck in finding anything about the above. Does anyone know where I can find any articles, texts, tutorials or information on creating a GTA type game engine ? If you have any info, please get in touch... Thanks in advance.... r!K EMAIL : rik@ram-productions.net ICQ : 74183404

If I remember the GTA engine correctly, its a 2d/3d hybrid engine. I''d say the best approach you could take would be to work with DirectX and D3D. Go grab yourself the DirectX SDK and a copy of MS Visual C/C++.

There are plenty of online programming resources, take a look here

http://www.microimages.com/~dwilliss/programming/noframes/win.html

for general Win programming resources, and

http://www.microimages.com/~dwilliss/programming/noframes/games.html

for some game programming resources.

and of course

http://www.microsoft.com/directx/

obviously, hehe.

Hi,

It''s a 2d tiled map, with each tile having a minimum height, maximum height and slope direction (north/east/south/west). The slope direction determined which edge of the tile has the highest height. Bridges, walkways, garages and other ''above floor level'' constructions are special cases that can be added to the map.

When viewed ''in game'', the height values lift the various sections of floor, allowing it to be drawn in 3d. It''s actually quite similar in concept to Doom!

Do a search for GTA editing sites, get an editor (one is M25, can''t remember the other one) and have a play around, you will soon see exactly what data needs storing for a similar engine. The same sites may have script editing resources, the GTA script format isn''t too hard to understand, and may give you some ideas for your engine.

Good luck & have fun
