Speaker Buzz

Original Post
Hello. Whenever I hook my speakers (Cambridge Soundworks) directly to my sound card (SB Live!) I get a weird buzzing sound that doesn't go away unless I turn the woofer off or unplug the cables from the sound card. The buzz is not affected by the volume the speakers are set to. If I hook up my portable CD player to the speakers/woofer, there is no buzz at all. When I hook my headphones up to the soundcard there is, again, no buzz at all. I know next to nothing about electricity and interference, so please be easy on me. :)

Sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere... You could always wrap the cables in tin foil (make sure not to short out the connections!) then connect a wire from the tin foil to ground (a water pipe?) - that should help any intereference, but I doubt it's that.
If it was a dodgy connection, wouldn't it make the buzzing in some other places and not just between the speakers and the computer? I'm really confused by this. Thanks a lot for the help, anyway.
If it is a really quiet buzz, it's probably a "60 Hz buzz" which occurs in all cheap speakers. I bought a set of Logitech speakers because they had the same stat's as a far more expensive Klipsch model. If the room is perfectly silent you can hear a 60 hz buzz from the subwoofer.

I have the same problem. The buzzing sound almost goes away if I turn off the monitor.
I just tried turning off my monitor and it has no audible difference at all. Thanks anyway. I'm running out of ideas to try. :(

Well the thing that kinda weirds me out is that the buzz never used to happen, and it doesn't happen when I hook my CD player up directly to the speakers. The speakers aren't very cheap AFAIK also. They're a few years old though.
Aha! Finally, I fixed it. I changed the outlet to the wall instead of from a power-bar and everything's fine now. It was REALLY bugging me because it was like that for the last few months, I must have hooked it up to the power bar instead of the wall when I got home from a LAN party or something.
