If glaux is outdated then what is it I should be using instead? All I need is a simple way to load images to use as textures. [edit] I am using SDL by the way... [/edit]

How about SDL_image ?

Loading uncompressed TGA or BMP images is generally very easy if you don't want the additional bloat of SDL. Just get the spec from http://www.wotsit.org/, create a suitable struct for the header and fill it. From there, loading in the image data is very easy.

Another good image library is DevIL.

However, I've decided to only support DDS files and TGA files, and I've written a simple loader for each. DDS for those DXT compressed images, and TGA for regular, obese 32-bit.
