When I try to change the refresh rate with SetDisplayMode() it just ignores me. Is this supposed to work? Anyone have any ideas? Alastair

You shouldn''t need to change the refresh rate, why do you want to do it? It will fail if you use a refresh rate the video card doesn''t support. You should always have it at 0, to set the default refresh rate, otherwise you may get trouble.

Well mainly I want to do it because it''s there. Of course it would fail if the requested refresh rate wasn''t supported. In fact though I can''t even set it to a supported refresh rate. I can''t set it to anything but 0 (default as you say). Does it actually work for you (assuming a supported rate of course)?

It works on my desktop computer with an adjustable refresh rate monitor, yes, but it doesn''t work with anything other than 0 on my laptop computer which can''t have it''s refresh rate changed.

Some cards simply don''t support setting the refresh rate in DD.

I wouldn''t use it in my game as a standard if I were you. In my game (non-commercial) experienced users will be able to set it manually but the default will be 0...

If you look at the results you get using EnumDisplayModes, you will notice that most drivers only report 0Hz as a possible refresh rate for all resolutions. In this case you can''t specify the refresh rate using SetDisplayMode.

Thanks for all the info folks

I can get it to work, but I think it''s graphic card dependent. You should do a GetCaps on the card to see.

As a side note, why would you want anything less that the maximum refresh rate?

I''d do that with proper timing (and so would any other serious programmer IMHO)
What if you get a machine that doesn''t reach that max fps? Then the game is slower-paced than on other machines!

i am 100% positive you can enumerate all refresh rates of the sytem and then choose the best one...look in directx sdk enum stuff...120hz is much better then 60hz, and people have very good monitors these days especially if they are playing games
have fun,

YOu can, but as you may have noticed if you had read the thread at all, NOT ON ALL MACHINES . Some people''s display drivers do not support it, myself included. Just because it works on your machine doesn''t mean anything, it could fail on every other single computer in the universe (well, actually it doesn''t, but it doesn''t work on either of my computers).

Please state the nature of the debugging emergency.
