To the right of the message box, you could have a series of buttons that when clicked, would atuomatically post the basic code where the cursor is. For example, there could be an include an image button, and when pressed would put where the cursor is: img src="
"> Then the person can just replace the
with the website. There could be one for images, code, links, etc. It would make it a lot easier to post, and get rid of the annoying repetetivness of writing the html code.

well it maybe a nice option for people who aren't use to post. If you have a large post could use a html web building tool like frontpage that's the only solution for now and probably the best.

The problem with such buttons is that making them work in most browsers would be a pain, and gamedev.net (being the tech-savy place it is) has users using just about every browser there is (see a post on here {forum suggestions} that mentions text-only browsing).

They should at least have a text explanation of the tags in that area though, so the posts asking how to do various tags would cease.

Or it could just be added to the FAQ[...]
But then nobody that needed it would see it. Putting it beside the post box would make it more visible to everybody and more convenient.

Perhaps not necessarily so, what with links to the FAQs beside evey forum and all...

I actually have browsed GDnet with Lynx before. I had trashed everything on my computer except the Linux CLI. It wasn't fun, let me tell you.

Couldn't you just implement [ img ] tags like some other forums? We use things like [ source ] all the time; they save us the effort of typing a lot of html (which the forum wouldn't allow otherwise). If it was designed modularly it shouldn't be to hard to make a new forum tag.

Not true. Here's a sample that works in Firefox, IE 6, and Safari (and Konqueror):
function addlist()  {    var txtarea = document.getElementsByName('myTextField');    txtarea[0].value += 'add this text';    txtarea[0].focus();  }

People with older browsers or text-only browsers can type things in like they do now.

igni ferroque: And that is better than the text on the side how? Personally, I HATE when forums provide buttons that don't properly insert text where the selection is (or cursor when 0 characters are selected) because every other post I'll forget to put something in the middle of the post, go back and use the button, only to find it didn't save me any work at all since I still have to move it to the proper location.

Text to the side is more browser friendly (it should work on ANY browser that properly displays the rest of the page) and more user friendly (to me at least) because it does what one would expect (nothing) while the buttons as you describe them would not(they insert at the end always which is unlike every other text editing interface for just about every program on every OS)

I don't know. Personally I'm so used to typing HTML that it would be distracting to reach for the mouse.

...I thought I was the only one hardcore enough to browse GDNet in Lynx [wink]
