I'm trying to learn MFC, and I wonder - do real programmers have to use reference manuals, or do they just memorize everything? How long does it take to memorize an API if so? I have to use a reference making SDL pong, so I'm hoping for a self-esteem booster.

Well, I never bothered to memorize all of MFC. Most of the common stuff sticks, but as for the rest... let's just say there's a reason I have MSDN hotkeyed on my computer.

... do real programmers have to use reference manuals...
All the time. I memorize the stuff I use frequently, but other than that, I rely on the reference manuals. It's a waste of time to memorize everything, since most stuff, you'll use rather infrequently. I'm talking in general, not MFC specifically. But anyway, I guarantee almost all "real" programmers rely heavily on reference manuals. Mainly because if we took the time to memorize everything, we wouldn't have any time left to code, and by the time we memorized everything, it would be obsolete. I certainly never tried to memorize any part of DirectX, that's for sure.

Why do we get a post like this every so often? People feel bad for using references? The job of a programmer is to do thinking, not to memorize stuff.
