I'm having a few computer problems here - unfortunately, ones which I don't know how to fix. First off, I have two computers - a new one downstairs, and an old one upstairs. Downstairs one is connected directly to the router through ethernet, and upstairs one is connected through wireless g. On upstairs, I can ping the downstairs computer with no problems. Downstairs, it doesn't work. Both computers have a ZoneAlarm firewall. If it matters, downstairs is a Dell, Windows XP Home (preinstalled), upstairs is HP, Windows ME (not preinstalled). Another problem I am having is that the downstairs computer frequently crashes with a BSOD. The error is 'BAD_POOL_CALLER' and the file that seems to be causing it (by Microsoft's analysis anyways) is a driver for Norton Antivirus 2003. Supposedly it should have been fixed by a LiveUpdate update, but I've updated and it still crashes. It usually crashes when I'm surfing the web but I'm not noticing any specific pattern. This is why I need to connect to the upstairs computer - so I can transfer important files and reformat to see if it helps. If anyone has any ideas how I could get this to work, please tell me! Thanks in advance!

First off, disable ZoneAlarm. And make sure the XP machine doesnt have its built in firewall turned on. Its can be found in the control panel.

Try those, then come back to us.

Wow, why didn't I think of that? I was assuming that, because the upstairs com could ping the downstairs while the firewall was on, it should also work the other way around. rating++ for you. Anyways, I can ping the computer now, and all I need to do is to setup sharing. That's not working either, because whenever I try to access a shared folder on the upstairs com, it asks for a username and password (while the username cannot be changed from ...\Guest to the real username). Anyone know how to change this?

Also, does anyone have an ideas about the BSOD or do I really have to reformat?

Thanks in advance!

Good job on the sharing thing.

Without really being there to help and poke around on the PC thats puking up BSODs, I cant help much. Since its a Dell, it most likely has a ton of "crap" software on it. Try and remove as much of said crap as possible. Also, it wouldnt hurt to run some spyware stuff. Could be a peice of malware thats breaking. Spybot to start with, then Ad-Aware. Also, grab a free virus scanner like AVG and run that.
