Hi everyone, networking problem here. (I assume it''s OK to post this in the Lounge) Problem is that no matter what I do, I can''t get my windows 95 machine to log into the network. The only other computer on the network has windows 98 and everything seems fine with that. The windows 95 machine is a Compaq, if that helps any. Has anyone else had problems with networking windows95 computers? Anyway, it''s probably something stupid that I''m doing I''ll try to install windows 98 on it and see how that comes out. Thanks, Martin

I have it done at my house..... we have my dad''s P166 Win95, dad''s P740 Win98SE and my P400 Win98SE all networked together.

Do you have all the right parts, like, a hub? An ethernet card?

If you place an infinite amount of monkeys in a room with an infinite amount of type-writers, they WILL type up the entire workings of Shakespeare before the next minute is over.

Fredric: Yes, I have all the right parts A CNET hub, ethernet cards, etc.

Updated problem--I installed w98 on the w95 computer and now (in network neighborhood)it can atleast log into the network, but it can only see itself and not my other computer. So everything''s hooked up but each computer can only see itself and not eachother. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Martin

are you sure they''re in the same workgroup?
and try setting the ip''s to be in the same range e.g. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
sometimes windows defaults to some weirid number, and that might screw things up

Quantum: Yes, I named them under the same workgroup. Also, I tried what you said about the IP addresses. Still no go.

This is getting to me now. It can''t be a physical problem with the connection or faulty hardware I don''t think, so what is it? Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks,
Martin

try this:
find the ip's of both computers (winipcfg.exe)
get one computer to ping the other one
if it doesn't reply at all, then you know somethings screwed up - try getting the latest drivers for the network cards, reinstall all protocols etc

if it does reply (and i just thought of this then) - it could be netbui is not installed or is corrupted. im pretty sure windows networking needs netbui, and ping uses tcp/ip.
im probably not being very useful.. but still, try what i said here

Quantum: Thanks so much for the help! It turns out that the IP address tip worked! I owe you one. Also, I totally forgot about trying to ping.

Again, thanks a lot.
