While trying to get back to the mind set of writing a SWF File Parser, I came across a thought of creating an open-source Maya. I started thinking of all the other open-source programs that basicly emulated other very expensive programs such as Open Office (openoffice.org). I figured since Maya cost hundreds of moola that it would be nice for all those not richy riches to have a chance to expierence such a program. So I invite anyone would like to contemplate this idea with me to send an email to (OpenSourceMaya@hotmail.com).

Good luck with that. Maya is really complex.

Yeah... blender is as good as it gets for the opensource community. You know it takes ALOT more then ideas to make an good opensource 3D editor.

I think Maya is a lot more complex than people realize. I might even say that Maya is one of the most complex pieces of software ever created. Even if you've been working with it professionally for years, there is absolutely no way you'll know everything about it. Just recreating the flexibility of their architecture on paper is an incredibly complex task. Coding the framework would require herculean ammounts of effort. Once you get down to implementing a plethora of specific components that Maya already has, you'll find that it will probably take millions of man hours just to get to the state Maya is already in.

A noble quest, but maybe something like an open source Milkshape would be easier/more realistic?

Yah, Blender is the shit, and it's getting better, and better, and better with each sequential release.

2.35 is quite the piece of work, I must say.

I thought this thread was going to tell me that there was going to be an open source version of Maya. :(

I know about blender and it is a good 3d editor, but it was just an idea. I know it would take tons of work from many individuals. I would like to know if anyone would be willing to TRY making a program LIKE maya. Does not have to be as complex as maya. The thought I originally had, was about a program that had many of the features, such as hair, fur, fluids, cloth, dynamics, etc. It would not all be implemented in the first version, obviously.

Yeah me too LOL :)

To the OP: Good idea, really, since there's only one serious OSS contender on the market, and competition is good as they say. But unless you're very experienced with Maya or 3ds and thus know what these programs needs contentwise and also have programming and project leading experience I think it'll be very difficult for you to get off the ground - sorry I don't mean to be all Mr. Negativity :). Good idea tho'!

Cardinal sin.

You create an executable, functional core, and then you invite people to join the project. Failure to do this reduces your probability of success in Open Source to effectively zero.

Further, unless you have determined that existing codebases are inadequate for your purposes, you prefer to fork a current project or at least incorporate code from it. Given that there are many Open Source 3D modelers, talking about starting a project of this magnitude from scratch at this point in time is not efficient, or particularly smart.

Just a few logistical/strategic suggestions.
