There's been a couple times lately that I could have made use of public SQL databases on various topics. Is there such a thing as a public database that anonymous users can query and possibly manipulate through a programming language, as opposed to through a user interface? You'd think it would be one of the cooler possibilities for the internet. Some examples of useful databases would be linguistic word lists, thesauruses, statistics about cities, weather stats, geography, etc. I've googled around a couple times but have so far come up empty.

It's an interesting idea, but I can't say I've heard of any. Rather than a straight database, I think we'd be more likely to see a public web service that you can access using SOAP.

I've never heard of one. Even sites that have free db access still make you set up a password so that they don't get hijacked. If you think about it, would YOU want to have a database naked to the evil evil world of the internet? I sure wouldn't. Even if I didn't care who saw and used the data.
