Hello people!, dont know if this is the right place to ask this type of question but....well im new here, and it seems about right....i guess. i thought about the beginners forum, the thing is that its a help question, but it doesnt concern technical or programming topics.... so i'll be very grateful if some of you could be of help. i'd really really appreciate it. i've always been a fan of video games ever since i was a child, specifically rpgs. recently (and thats my problem)i've seriously considered working in the gaming industry, and now i know thats exactly what i want to do with my life, game designig and programming. i have so many great ideas and i know i'll be perfect for it. but theres a problem...im 22 and i know very little about programing! to please my father back when i was 17 and had no idea about what i wanted to do with my life so i went to law school, in my country its 5 years....i recently graduated but im so unhappy with this career, i'd love to desing games, it has become my passion, and what little i know about programming proves it: i love it! So the real question here is am i to old to start self teaching and programming my own games?, and would i be to old at 27 when i graduate from computer science to enter the industry?! i dont even know if thats the right schooling i need!!, i will be starting next year in computer science (well, the equivalnet in Spain), but i've heard about the game programming specific schools in the US....but the thing is i know its almost impossible to enter these and more so for a foreigner, and i'll probably have to lose another year or so doing the sat and toefl... i`ve thought about trying to enter those schools after i graduate...but that would make my 32 when i finally graduate from them!! what do you think? any recomendations? about schooling, how to get into the industry at that age, whatever, anything please!! thank you all very much!

A lot of the work in any course is going to have to be done yourself.
This guide here is very useful.
I guess the first thing you should do is start coding yourself. I've been mucking about writing games for a while and all I can say is that Computer Science (at Cambridge, at any rate) is very little to do with actually coding anything, and is more to do with the overall theory. So grab a compiler, get some ideas, a good book or an online tutorial, and try and write something. Tetris, Pong, anything - and then build up from there.

Being that the industry is still relatively young, I would suggest building a resume and portfolio along with going to school. If you have something that proves you know what you are doing(working game demo, anybody?), that says quite a bit. Obviously a degree can never hurt, also. See if you can intern at a gaming company, work part time, anything. Someone else said it first, I'll just repeat, a large part is just getting in the door.

As for your age, I don't think that matters so much. No one should turn you away because you are 32 instead of 22, especially if you've been through that much school.

Edit:

If i were you i'd continue in the career you were educated for. Be a laywer (or whatever you turn out of law school - i have no idea here) but that doesn't mean you can't learn programming in the meantime.

I wouldn't want a career in the game programming business, after all the stories i've heared about it, but that doesn't mean i don't want to work on game programming by myself.
