Verge is my favorite 2D engine. It uses a scripting language that''s basically a simplified version of C with just about everything you need to make RPGs.
Of course, I''m working on my own engine now, so I don''t use it anymore, but it''s a nice base for building a game, and very easy to learn if you already know C.
