Original Post
i am a university student at cardiff university in wales and as part of my research for an assignment need to study some games that have created an occult related media scare. i am finding this task close to impossible so any help that might point me in the right direction will be gratefully received.
How about a "Christ Centered Game Review" of Doom3?
Quote:
Rating: 0 out of 5 due to high levels of occult images and sounds, massive gore, and terrifying exposure to hell and demons. No game has gone so far as Doom III.

Thats an interesting link you got there. I did think the guy was fair coming from where he is comming from, and sounded like he knew his history and all. I didn't get the impression like he was out to say that it would be linked to school shootings around the world or anything. An ingreedent I would think in a media scare.
The only game I can remember any big media deal with at all is Mortal Kombat but that was purly for violence and not for occult factor. Its hard to make a big deal made over that sort of thing because the population base that would be interested is much smaller than the one for violence.
From the link I posted...
[wow]
...and a game I'd love to see:

If you don't think media (including video games) can have an effect on people, you must be completely and utterly secluded from civilization. I mean, Finding Nemo for example. Hundreds of people flushed their clown fishes down the toilet because of it.

I'll bet if the Doom marine was dressed as the Pope and ran around dishing out 'divine ownage' on all the baddies, you'd give the game 10/10
Man hunt caused a big media backlash over here when some 15 year old kid or something murdered his bestfriend in an horrific way (which i can't exactly remember how). There will be any media stories about it on UK new site archives if you look. Thats all I can really think up right now.

Yes - the Daily Mail published scare stories about violent games, didn't they? Linky.
Try searching about the original Ultimas (3 I think). One had demons on the front, there was a fair backlash from the 'Christian' community against Garriot which is one of the reasons (or so he said) he was so interested in adding a none religion based morality that was so important to the fourth game (which gave the message, you don’t need religion to be a good person).
Im sure there should be articles on this if you looked.
Hmm I think there might have been problems with a pentagram on the front of an ultima box aswell, but not so sure on that one. Might be worth a check too.

Appropriateness:
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is full of blood, gore, intense violence, very mature sexual themes, and VERY bad language. Violence is to be expected in a sequel to Max Payne, but the added sexual themes, and bad language aren’t called for. Mona Sax is seen in the shower, while Max walks in and she asks him to hand her a towel. She covers herself and walks out of the room with the towel around her waist. This scene isn’t really that bad, just a bit of sexual innuendo, but what this scene leads up to is highly inappropriate. Max Payne has nightmares, and about the second or third nightmare, Max finds himself in a bathroom again, Mona’s bathroom. You hear Mona loudly moaning and saying very provocative things. It just wasn’t necessary and a waste of good game space. Mona and Max also have a confrontation against a wall, where Max puts Mona up against the wall and they kiss and moan. Max meets up with a gun toting hooker who is dressed very scantily. The use of alcohol and drugs can be seen within Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne quite a few times. There is also an execution within the game, a woman is tied to a chair and shot in the head. All of this is seen close up, and nothing is held back. This game curses worse than The Sopranos and doesn’t let up on the cursing. The F-word is said in succession 3 times, and then twice more not 1 minute later. I won’t go any further into the cursing because there are too many times to list. This game is flat out sickening in appropriateness. Max Payne 2 receives an F in appropriateness.
I knew I wanted to play MP2!

LMAO!!
...The comments on the review are GREAT.
(and I like that the only people who agree with it are called "Godsbaby", "Childoflight", and a play on Aquinas' name)...
and one of my favorites:

Truly this is the greatest review to have graced the internet. I praise you and give you thanks in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Because of your commitment to the faith, I have just learned that a long lost, wealthy relative of yours from Nigeria recently found a massive stockpile of herbal viagra before he died because he didn't pass on a chain letter to ten of his friends. Email me at ebay_accountconfirm@hotmail.com for more information on this once-in-a-mortal-lifetime offer!
But, to stay somewhat on topic, the Grand Theft Auto games have certainly created media scare, if not necessarily occult-related.
(edit)Oh, and this
Quote:
You state that this game is inappropriate due to the high amount of satanic content. As we all know, Christians claim that evil is all around us in the world. So, in both the real world and world of Doom III evil is everywhere.
By your logic, that makes this world and life inappropriate. Life would receive a 0 out of 5 rating and you’d recommend that every Christian stay away from it. My question is, then, why do you bother living?
If you really believe what you say in this review you will find the nearest bridge and jump off it. If you do not jump off the nearest bridge at your earliest convenience then I assume it is safe to dismiss this review as pure hypocrisy. Imagine that, a bible thumper full of hypocrisy...
and lastly:

I thought they'd be okay with killing the demons. I suppose they'd be alright if you were killing Iraqis or something.
boooo that website hasnt done a review of Vampire:Bloodlines [sad] The fact that you have to kill the modern day Inqusition in one part (and that it was REALLY easy as well) should be enuff for them to rant about it [grin]
John Carmack is a twisted son of a monkey.
This is the worst, most evil game ever created.

Hehe, the best quote from the review comments is this one:
I'm pretty sure God has better things to do than help mere mortals beat computer games.

IF HE HAD NOT PLAYED THE GAME ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH, HE COULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS REVIEW IN GOOD CONSCIENCE. IT WAS BY THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT HE WAS ABLE TO PLAY IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
