I realize there''s no such thing as a crash course on 3D graphics, but that''s essentially what I''m looking for. If anyone can point me to any GOOD books or online tutorials that cover 3D graphics concepts, programming, D3D, common file formats, engine design, etc. etc. Not all necessarily in the same book (I think that would outdo most encyclopedias). Advanced technique and algorithms I don''t need (yet), I''d just like to get a basic 3D engine up and running. I have one or two (unread) books already, but I''d like to hear whatever you have to throw at me first before buckling into those. Many thanks in advance... Radhil Trebors Persona Under Construction

If you want a shortcut, Fastgraph gives you plenty of 3D functionality and handles the math for you. Here''s a simple tutorial.

If you don''t want a shortcut (you want to write it yourself), I explained the mathematics of the rotation matrix pretty thoroughly here. But you are going to need to do a lot more than rotation. You will probably need many books and tutorials to work through it all. I did. It took months.

Ted posted a new shareware version of Fastgraph tonight. It''s really pretty nice. It does what you would do, if you already knew how to do it, and you could program in assembly language.

you could wait for The continuation of "Tricks of Windows Game Programing Gurus" by Andre laMothe. it is coming in somewhat near future.(at least it was said that it was coming in the end of the year)

Well, Fastgraph would prolly help you do somestuff quickly, but the beauty about being an amateur game develepor is that you learn as you do stuff, which is really what has kept me going. There are a few books I would suggest. Real-Time Rendering should be in every 3D programmers arsenal. It covers nearly everything that you would need to know about the 3D math behind the programming. A good reference on your choice of API is also good. And then most people suggest Andre''s TOTWGPG, I can''t comment on that book because I do a whole lot of cross-platform code and Mac code so I havent invested in it even tho im now dipping into windows.

You can get an engine or other package like fastgraph, but I would really suggest learning whats going on.

If you don''t mind 0 source code, check out Real Time Rendering.

If you want to use Direct3d then Advanced 3d Game Programming by Adrian Perez.

If you want OpenGL, then nehe''s openGL tutorials.

And, If you REALLY have your math together there 3d Engine Design by David Eberly. Not for the weak in linear algebra.

0 source code isnt a bad thing, alot of times people get all caught up in the syntax and they have no clue whats going on.

Thank you for the plug, Diana , but no, I need to learn the mechanics sooner or later, and sooner is better (if more painful) than later.

Alchemist: Unfortunately, without knowing when it will be out, I can''t hold off. I definitely get it when it comes, but I need something before then.

Thank you firahs and Vetinari for the recommendations, I''ll pick a few up.

Of course zero source code is not a bad thing, it was just a warning, because for some it is a bad thing. Real Time Rendering will definitely not make a 3d engine for you, if that''s what you are looking for.

If you need something fast, there are a couple of books that basically supply you with a 3d Engine, with source, on the CD''s that come with them. The Adrian Perez book mentioned above is one of them and is also just generally a good book.

*DON''T* get Advanced 3D game programming by that Adrian guy. It''s awful for a newbie!
