My wireless router for my laptop was working nicely until about 2 days ago, when our entire internet connection stopped working. We have a LINKSYS Cable Modem and a LINKSYS wireless broadband rotuer. I called my ISP aobut this, and they told me that their internet stopped recognizing "routed" internets because something or another (MAC?) detected 2 connections through one. Even disregarding that information, do you guys have any idea what the representative could have been talking about or how to go about fixing it? The modems all blink...correctly but when the entire connection is put through the wireless router, nothing gets through.

I am not exactly sure what the rep is talking about. If the router is working correctly, than its existence should be fairly transparent. Have you tried resetting your cable modem and/or router? Sometimes my cable internet will give up all hope of life, and then I reset everything, and it works fine again. Also, trying to do a DHCP release/renew on your router may help. To see if you can get an IP from them again. If none of that works, perhaps posting what you have done, and more information about your setup would be helpful.

If your wireless router has cable connectors as well, try to use an UTP (Cat 5) cable to conenct one computer to it, and disable the wireless stuff from it's setup. Maybe a neighbour is stealing your Internet connection or something?

Is your router set up to spoof MAC addresses? It should be.

It should be impossible to detect that way.

btw, does plugging a computer straight into the modem still work?

Resetting doesn't help at all. Yes, directly connecting to the modem works. That's how I'm posting this on here. I'm pretty sure the representative talked about something about MAC addresses.

Well, if you go into the linksys setup page, and then under setup select "MAC address clone", you can enable the MAC cloning service, and click the clone button. This will make it so their router thinks it's your computer, and not the router. At least that is the theory, my ISP doesn't put such restrictions on my service.. yet.

What is the MAC address thignamabob anyway?

It is a unique hardware address for a NIC card, like a serial number. although, they are hardly unique. You can spoof them in the registry.
