I don´t know anything about internet programming and I wan´t to start learning something useful. I can program C++ and DirectX. I dont know where to start. I don´t even know how to get a URL or how to put a picture up on the web! I want to learn something that is harder then HTML but easier then ASP... In the future I want to create dynamic web-pages. Witch is the best internet tool for C++?
Thanks guys!
What do you mean by internet programming? "Best internet tool" to do what?

First, do your homework and find out how the Internet works!
You can''t just plop a webpage on www.whatever.com. First, getting a domain name costs money (usually). Second, C++ isn''t the language of choice for Internet programming. Try the different varieties of HTML, such as XML, DHTML, etc. Also, you''ll want to know some Java and java-script. You''ll also want to know either CSS or tables for layout. Third, HTML is not a programming language, it is a markup language! Last, you''ll want to host your pages somewhere, or nobody will be able to see it.
I hope this clears things up a little.

Have you already looked up sockets? These are the building blocks for client-server connections.
You might also get a better understanding of IP addresses, domain names & servers and all the usual inet stuff.
Knowing a bit about the ras service for modems is good I think.
Also fidling around with your Windows internet settings can give you a better idea...

Did somebody say Java? it''s the leader in IT and the web programming
I wish there was a button on my monitor to turn up the intellegince.
Theres a button called 'brightness' but it doesn't work

Why is Java a so much better internet language? I mean C++ and Java is almost the same (C++ without pointers). I know HTML isn´t a real programming language. It cannot be compared with Java by example. When I say Internet programming i speak in general terms. I am a beginner and want to learn something usueful and easy to finaly, when I feel ready and have enough knowledge, develop a real RPG on the web. Please explain what DHTML and XML is! And Java-script what is that? Is it similar to VB-script (easy and fun) ?
I havent looked at sockets. I don´t know anything about it. Is it something similar to DirectPlay? And what is the great thing about DirectPlay ?
Please have patience with me.
Thanks guys/girls!

well, i personally hate java. although i''m making money from java programming...
i guess java is the top language for internet programming (ONLY) because of the security options that it has + the ease of networking in java...

your clueless about java aren''t you? Java is a rapid development language it can cut down development time by 30+% It is more pure of an OOP language allowing you to avoid common pitfalls in c/c++. Java does have pointers for every object you make it is a pointer just under a different name called a "reference" :D. Java was designed for all solutions client, server, and Internet. It is the future of CGI and soon or sometime in the next 3 years to probably the standard for internet programming. It is cross platform which is very important to todays digital age. If you know java you will probably never be out of a job many IT professionals say. I could go on for another 15 senteces why java is the best choice for internet programming.
Pouya how can you hate programming in java, I think its the best move a programmer can make.

okay, now wait a sec. the way i''m thinking it, there are (grossly categorized) TWO internet programming yer talkin'' about. for your game, and for your web-related site stuff. you CAN learn the overall workings of the Internet that applies to both, but once it comes down to what you wanna do, is it for your game or for a possible web site/application?
if for game: look into directplay and/or windows sockets
if for web site: look into HTML, DHTML, XML, Java, java-script, Flash, and other authoring programs.
DHTML is dynamic HTML. it adds some cool features that html cannot do, like lit hoverbuttons, and so forth, but it''s MS only.
XML is another markup language used for data transactions.
Java is used for overall web development, but can also be used for game development, which is a bad idea at this moment if you wanna make a grandscale game. java-script is a watered down version of Java, which allows you to put Java code "inline" into your HTML files.
personally, i would find it most beneficial to start learning the basics of how the internet works, like what TCP/IP is, and all the different network architectures there are, and then you can move onto what your applications for the internet will be.

oh, i didn''t realize you also asked about windows sockets.
windows sockets is a lower-level of network programming compared to directplay. so, dplay runs on top of windows sockets. if you want more control over the networking aspect of your game, use windows sockets. it''s easy to program, but still requires more knowledge than dplay to get it all working properly. dplay, is difficult in the sense that windows sockets makes more sense when programming, but since you know direct x already, you may be at home with dplay. however, it doesn''t give you the control that winsock provides.

Pouya how can you hate programming in java, I think its the best move a programmer can make.
first off, i dont like the way that everything has to be in classes and for the smallest most stupid thing you have to make a different class and a .class file
secondly, java is slow, and it requires a virtual machine to be run
third, no pointer == no fun/no power
Nazrix might be cool, but he's half liberitarian!

You don''t have to, now do you?

Speed is often of utmost importance, but not always. I wouldn''t choose Java to program a 3D game, but how many other things could benefit from a clean, strict OOP language (if you think C++ is an elegant approach at OOP then there''s something wrong).

no pointer == no fun/no power
== no clue about how to really use Java
well, i''m pretty sure i can program in java better than most o ppl in here, so you don''t have to tell me who doesn''t have a clue about java programming.
and what''s the point of using strict OOP? OOP is just a way to make your code slower (j/k, although it does turn to use more references than modular programming)
keep in mind that we''re in a GAME development website. and java is an awful language for game development (i just wanna see you making Tiberian Sun in java)

I said it already, and I meant it. I''m not going to debate with you who''s a better Java programmer: I''m not 5 years old. You can think what you want and I''ll do the same until somebody shows me better.

There are many advantages of using strict OOP, and not all of them relate to programming performance. (I suppose you''re going to ask me for an example. Java is an excellent teaching tool. Most Computer Science faculties are using Java in their introductory courses to teach people paradigms as opposed to programming ). Do you think think that LISP, Prolog, SmallTalk and other languages that are not designed for performance are useless?

Sure, and you keep in mind that this thread is on Internet Programming and this is the GDNet Lounge . Did you even read my post? I explicitly said that I wouldn''t choose Java to make a 3D game (maybe I should have have just said game instead of 3D game ).
Listen pouya...after reading your posts I get the impression that you''re not being very open-minded. Take a course relating programming languages to programming paradigms. You''ll be surprised at what you don''t know (and that goes for everyone, including myself).
Programmers always like to think that they know it all. Hey, I''m like that too. But there''s a bigger world out there...
*yawn*
i'm just thinking, who started flaming on this thread? i said i dont like java and i gave my reasons. now stop flaming in here and let this guy get his answer
ok, look at it this way: i dont like java (although i AM using it everyday) and you seem to like it. no matter what i say i'm not gonna be able to convince you. and no matter what you say you're not gonan be able to convince me. so let's stop at this point and let other take over.

i hate java. but if it brings in the bucks, by all means...
actually, i haven''t touched java that much yet, but from what i''ve seen, i''m gonna have to agree with pouya. i don''t wanna have to make a stinkin'' class for the littlest thing, and it runs really slow, even for non-game apps, like applets and stuff. i''m sure it''ll get better in time. java''s young, it''ll get better.

actually i remember that one o the CSC profs had this idea that java will be dying soon and ActiveX will take it''s place
i still dunna what they''re gonna do wit hnon-windows platforms. but if what he said is gonna become true, java will die young.

*sigh*
Ever overheard someone say something like "personally, I like Ferrari''s better than Porsche''s because they blah blah blah..." . It''s always a different story when you''re behind the wheel. Anyhow...that''s a tangent I don''t want to lose focus on...
Honestly, I don''t like Java that much either. But at least I give it a fair chance. I realize now that the task of convincing a group of game programmers that Java is important is impossible. Worse yet, it''s a waste of time. It''s like settling the OpenGL vs. DirectX debate, it''s just not going to happen.
Let me state for the record that I agree with pouya on the following points:
1) Java is well suited for writing networking code
2) Java code running on a JVM is slower than native C++ code
3) The overhead of certain OOP features can make your program slower
4) Java isn''t a good language for game development
I personally find that many Java programmers, by virtue of the fact that they learned C (or C++) first, employ Java as if it was a syntactic variant of something they already know. Java is much more than that, but sadly it may be more important to the study of programming languages rather than the performance of computer programs .
Neither Java nor C++ are the programming panacea some people would have you believe. They each have their flaws, just as they each have their benefits. I think it''s important not to participate in the zealotry-breeding trench warfare that the C++ and Java pundits like to encourage.
C++ and Java are two different languages, saying one is better than the other for all cases and all time is, in my opinion, an indication that you''re looking at things the wrong way.
pouya, you could be more right than you know about Java dying...or at least being replaced by another, better, language that isn't C++. There's a lot of research going on right now into the relationship between programming paradigms and programming languages. Hopefully there's always going to be something better on the horizon. Hey, maybe it'll be better than Java...and maybe then you and I might agree on something!
