I recently downloaded StarterMUD to learn MUD programming, but it is programmed in C instead of C++ which I am learning. Would you advise continuing to learn C++ and try to figure it out in a different way that StarterMUD or start learning C and using this source??

I think there is some mud source posted on this site in the article section. 'AberMud' or something like that. You could check that out. I'm not sure what language it's written in, as I've never looked at it.

It's at the above link.

C and C++ aren't exactly worlds apart. Keep learning C++, and then go back and read the source code if you want. You will be able to learn from it at least.

Well I was learning C++, but when i got the Winapi book, with C examples, I decided to learn C. And I am happy with it, there isn't much to learn, but there is much that needs to be understand. The C is part of C++ so it would actually help you get a grip at C++ also.

Well, you could write your own little MUD without starterMUD or whatever. Just think over all the designs properly and draw some UML diagrams.

I could hook you up with a standard C++ winsock wrapper class(And a partially completed telnet protocol wrapper class. But it still needs alot of work).

That is the problem...I don't know how to make a MUD. That is what I am trying to learn...

Learn to program first, and then make your mud. Don't try to build the titanic when you aren't ready to build a row boat yet.

You may already be aware of these, but here are a couple handy references for C++ muds.

I decided to whip up another MUD again. I wrote a socket class, a partially completed telnetsocket class, and I'm working on the login sequence now.

I'm currently whipping up a basic mud with rooms, login, etc. When I got that working, I add items and NPCs and then proceed to add a scripting language. I'm mostly working on it at school, since I have my hands full on other projects at home.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Well, I am pretty familiar with C++ which I am currently learning. I have built a login section of the code that tests for a username and the correct password, I have made a character creation process, and I started making the beginning tutorial...I figured this was quite a bit of stuff since I just started learning C++ like 2 or 3 weeks ago. I have a question though, when making a MUD, do I have to make a server to run it on or can I use current codebases like Diku, Merc, Circle, etc.? If I can use those, could someone tell me how...Thanks!

There is an article series here called MudPies that walks you through making a small mud server, then you can add your game over top of it(I think).

The DikuMUD code is very well-written and will probably help you out if you look at it.
