Winamp 5.07 is the most awesome thing ever! They have added tons of **FREE** streaming music videos and songs. Not only that, there are huge lists of internet radio in tons of genres. I strongly suggest everyone to get it, it is worth it. Nothing beats a whole ton of streaming music while programming [wink].

Seriously, this is the first you've heard of Internet radio? (pun intended [grin])

...I must have missed the pun there, because I don't get it.

"heard" of "Internet radio"? Ah, too subtle, maybe...

There isn't a pun. There's just a closeness between heard of Internet radio and heard Internet radio.

Uh, Winamp has supported streaming radio since version 2xx. I still use 2.97, because it has all the necessary and useful features, without all the extraneous bloat.

What bloat? The only people that could POSSIBLY complain about Winamp 5 having bloat are those with legacy hardware.

Without even playing any music Winamp 5.05 for me eats up almost 20MB RAM and 35MB paging file.

Ohh no, I've always heard internet radio - mostly via AOl and others back in the day. Its just that Winamp 5 is a lot better than Windows Media Player. Did you guys know if you exand the title bar to like almost 500 or so pixels, you can see the beatbox vis. Theres an option in the misc settings for it, but it's hidden when the top screen is to thin. Here's the image
Just some neat stuff overall!

With a large playlist, Winamp 2.97 takes up about 4.5MB RAM.

Oh boy, another argument on bloat. Are you using the classic skin? Resource usage should be pretty much identical to the older versions with it (I like the classic skin because its smaller, and I don't notice any change in the memory footprint.)

Also, if the RAM is free, let it be used. How much RAM do you have anyway? Ironically enough it is usually the people with 1gig or more of RAM that complain about 'bloated' apps because they never usually have enough apps loaded that the working set needs to be reduced in the first place. This is a good thing - programs are much snappier if Windows isn't having to adjust their working set every five seconds.

I don't know why everyone is so stingy with RAM these days. If you're measuring memory usage with task manager, just stop. It is quite wrong.

I was also told this once - and believed it. Until I upgraded my computer at least. After testing it out I found out it used a pitiful 6MB RAM. I then proceeded to curse at the person who told me this and kept me from using what is, IMO, a much better Winamp.

However, I had changed many preferences before checking its memory pull. I mostly forgot what the changes were otherwise I'd list them here.
[edit:] This was also with the default "modern" skin.

It's quite simple, actually. If you have the choice between X, which takes little RAM and offers you all the features you need, and Y, which takes more RAM and offers features you don't need, you will probably go with X.

I use Winamp to play music, not to burn CD's, rip/encode music, regulate the thermostat in my house, remotely start my car in the morning, or whatever other extraneous crap they've thrown in by now.

Actually, unless money is involved, I'd probably go with Y. I have a lot of programs that have a whole bunch of features I didn't need at the time....

2.97 would play streaming music, but I don't remember it having the internet radio listing, so that you could easily FIND the music.

In 2.xx, if you press alt-t it opens the winamp browser to the shoutcast page.

I'm still using 2.95. What is new in version 5 that is worth upgrading for? Didn't they fork off into a lite version and a paid verion too? Seems the only real improvements were to the skinning interface.

Recommended system requirements

* 1.5 GHz Pentium IV or comparable
* 128MB RAM
* 30MB Hard Disk Space
* 32bit Sound Card
* Windows 2000, Windows XP
* 8x speed or greater CD Burner (Required for Burning)
* 16x speed or greater CDROM (Required for Ripping)

Well, there is another reason to stay at 2.9x

Those are the recommended requirements - meaning it would be a good idea to have a comparable system while running everything at top-notch (which is still doubtfull). I've run Winamp 5 perfectly fine with the classic skin on a 400mhz/192MB RAM machine.

As for the differences, I haven't noted many except for CD ripping. I always figured I'd use other ripping software until I saw Nullsoft's - it's very nice and convenient.

There are security fixes that are for 5.0 only. Reason enough IMO.
