I'm using an SDK. I can run and compile it on my computer, but if i leave the directory structure the same and copy it to a different computer it crashes instantly. I'm assuming this is because the program is unable to find the .dll? how would i fix this?

what dll are you missing?
which SDK are you using?
what is the error message when your app crashes?
Don't be afraid to be yourself. Nobody else ever will be.

I'm using the Tokamak SDK (its a physics SDK) http://www.tokamakphysics.com/ The dll comes with the SDK (obviously).

the error is:
The instruction at "0x00404d54" referenced memory at "0x0000000c". The memory could not be "read".

By any chance does the other computer have SP2 installed, and your's does not? I am pretty sure that this error is part of SP2's new memory protection stuff.

Anyway, it means that there is an error in your program that your computer is not catching, but the other computer is.

Suggest you:
- Install SP2 on your computer
- Find where your program is reading from bad memory (perhaps it is accessing a NULL pointer somewhere?)
- Find where instruction 0x00404d54 occurs in your program. MSVC can do this, IIRC.

Both of us have sp2 installed. I tried creating a really simple .dll with a class and 2 functions. Again, it works on my computer but not on another one. It gets the same error message. Do dlls have to be "registered" ?

thanks

Under XP, in addition to the system32 and current dir paths, there is a registry entry that is used by LoadLibrary when locating DLLs. If the dll isn't listed in that registry entry, it's path isn't searched. Either install the SDK or try adding the path and file name of the dll here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

You can use Depends.exe to make sure the program is indeed missing a dll. It's better knowing then guessing.
