Hello all, I just got started into the wonderful world of 3-D programming. However it seems I have more questions than answers. I''m a third into the book, "The black art of 3-D programming" and the author is mentioning this address and that, etc..etc.. I must admit the last time I seriously did any programing was way back when (in the C-64 era) when the processor and everything was documented down to the last bit of memory. I guess the question I have is, where can I find good memory maps of a typical CPU (i.e so I know where what registers are, what''s ram, etc..etc) and of video cards (not VGA.that''s what im learning on) like something that talks of current cards.any overal advice would be greatly apreciated for someone just coming into this arena. Thanx a bunch!!

Now you use an API such as the Win32 API for windows or DirectX. Things have gotten far more complex and everyone has to play nicely with everyone else. Manufacturers generally won''t tell you the information you need to write a device driver. Instead they just give you a device driver with the hardware. Some provide their own API for using that hardware, but usually you are expected to use the OpenGL or DirectX APIs for low level access and not access the hardware directly. Before getting into those you should learn just to use the Windows GDI. When that is no longer fast enough for what you want to do then learn OpenGL or DirectX.

If you really want to get into the same type of stuff then there are books on writing device drivers. It is very hard to find the information you need to write a device driver and windows is rather demanding on what a device driver has to be able to do as well.
