You know what Microsoft needs to do? Well, if you're quick on the gun, you already know from the subject that what they need to do is make a safe mode for running games in. Seriously, why can't I have a mode in Windows without all the extra crap running in the background bringing my gaming "performance" to a crawl? All I really need is the drivers, anyway. Oh well...*sigh*

Hell, I just throw my games into a cardboard box, cut out a little hole and imagine I am playing games. 9999999999FPS!!! OH YEAH! (by the way, my cardboard box runs on the Shiva engine, so it's OFF THE SCALE!)

To go completely off topic though, I do think that a game-safe mode would be awesome.

It would be awesome if Microsoft released a "minimalist" version of Windows, without any useless stuff like themes, window animations, and so on.

In practice, the performance increase got by an "optimised" version of Windows should be minimal.

After all, all those useless systray tasks don't actually use up any resources once they're loaded, do they (Ignoring the P2P client constantly calculating file checksums and creating sockets, doing IO etc)

Anyway, this exists already, it's called "XBox"

You know that reminds of me when I was going to TAFE (It's a place that is after school but before Uni in terms of education) where one guy was trying to get an assignment done with about 10 minutes to go. All he had to do was insert a clipart picture of a printer to finish a section he was writing and he was done. Him and two other guys where CHURNING through heaps of free clipart sites for a printer, but nothing was what they wanted. I walked over, thought for a second, and typed in 'www.canon.com', and they got their picture of a printer. They all just sat there and said 'why in the flying hell did we not think of that?'. We all found it quite funny (plus I got a free beer out of it. SCORE!)

By the way, this was before the days of google image search, or even google in general.

My personal experience after switching from win98 to winxp is mixed, but I did notice a huge performance increase in some games. I even tested a bechmark and got something from 300 -> 600 fps. Not bad :)

It wouldn't be that hard if you had it setup so you could do boot profiles. You can already change nearly everything that has been legitimately installed on your computer from MSCONFIG.

You hear that M$? Boot profiles.

XBox is not a viable alternative for a computer replacement at this point. The reason mainly being that it is not upgradable, and I don't think it or its predecessors support PC games, which is what I generally stick to. However, if you could take PC games and play them on an XBox (have to have the Keyboard and Mouse, though), that would be wonderful. Especially on the upcoming consoles.

Note: I may be wrong on the support for PC games part. If I am, tell me. I may just have to get an XBox.
