Hey, I'm a fairly unexperienced programmer, and I was thinking of making an extremely basic non-online rpg in Java, just for the sake of practising my Java skills. I know how to use classes, Polymorphism (sp?), inheritence, and all of those basic things. Here is my idea, and I would like to know if it's out of my league. In this game, there's very little story, and the game takes place entirely in battles (you basically just level up via battling vs the computer). You can be a mage of either of the 4 basic elements, with basic stats, strength, and so on (pretty standard). You have magic points and can learn 10 different spells per class. The inclusion of mixed classes might be included but is not essential (such as fire / water mage). This would be entirely text-based (in the console) and battles would be simple and turn-based. Is the a good idea, or is it probably too hard to do? I have messed around with small bits of things like this and I have seemed to done fairly well, just haven't committed to a full project like this (even though it would be terribly small). Does anybody have any suggestions or examples of similar projects?
