Hi, I know there are a lot of questions about level editors on here, but I can't seem to find anything that helps me with my question. I am trying to implement a 3d side-scrolling shooter game, the closest comparison I can think of is Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project. My biggest problem that I have run into is trying to decide how I am going to go about creating the levels. I have been considering a few editors like worldcraft, but they seem to be way more than I am needing. I don't think at this point that developing my own is the solution, but I could be wrong. After thinking about what I would like the levels to be like, I've come up with a few things that would describe the most I would need to do with the editor. First, I would only need a flat back wall and a floor, a ceiling would be optional. I would like to be able to add some objects on the floor, possibly destructable. I don't think I would need to be able to place enemies or powerups in the level editor, just the objects and the environment. That would be the bare minimum, I would like to be able to make the environment a little more interesting than what I just described, but that is pretty much the kind of editor I have in mind. Am I looking in the wrong places when I look at 3d level editors like worldcraft or even 3ds max? I don't really know where to begin when it comes to developing my own right now, it would really stop the progress of my game. I think I would like to finish this game before trying to continue learning more advanced 3d programming. If anyone has developed a project like this before, I would also appreciate some kind of help or tips if you have any. Thanks, Chase Gray

There are many ways to make level editors.

1) The usual level editors which load/edit maps. (WorldCraft, etc..)

2) Make a plugin for 3dMax/Maya/Blender/etc.. Basically the plugin will give you game related nodes/functions in your modelling software. This can be a time saver because the general editing features are already present in the software, you need not start from scratch and make the GUI, basic 3d editing features. Besides it is unlikely that your own editor will every match these dedicated modelling packages in terms of ease of use/functionality. You just make plugins to extend it. Also it will help that your artists are already familiar with it.

3) Ingame editor, you can edit the world from within the game.

4) Write level info directly into textfiles using Notepad.
Eg.
Table.3ds
Table x=100 y=50 z=200
