DirectX and Eclipse IDE integration help

I'm in the process of trying out a few IDE+compilers as an alternative to VS6 (more so since DirecX december update doesn't work with it). So far I've tried out Dev C++ with mingw and while it's a decent IDE, I got the impression it was a little underpowered. I'm now trying out Eclipse IDE, and it's confusing as hell. Not surprising, since it's a general purpose IDE. Anyhow, I've got it compiling and linking simple programs. What I'd like to know is, will direct X programs work with it (or rather, will they work with the mingw compiler?) I seem to get linking errors and dunno how to proceed. Another thing, is the DirectX december update supposed to work ONLY with visual .net compilers? If so, should I abandon all hope and work with the earlier direct X update?

I wouldn't expect Mingw to compile with the DX9 december SDK.

Yes, VC++2003 and up. You can grab the free Visual C++ 2003 compiler and use that with eclipse (or even the VS6 IDE) instead. The only limitation it suffers from is that it has no debug multi-threaded CRT.

Or, you can get the visual C++ express beta, which is quite good actually, and play with that.

Thanks for the prompt reply Coder! I'll try out both your suggestion regarding the free VC++ compiler and the express beta and see which works for me.

Merry X'mas!
