I was just watching the movie Hackers on tv, and it got me thinging, it looked like they where using there ohne operating system, how hard is it to program you ohne operating system, dos, windows or what every you would call it

You don''t want to go there. Really. You don''t. Programming an interface to go over a real OS might be a cool project. But an OS from scratch...ouch. Get a book on Operating Systems to find out about the wonders of semaphores, virtual memory paging and kernel layer multithreading.

actually i have a friend who sorda made an operating system (he''s all into assembly)
and he got a 386 computer for free. he''s gonna be testing his OS on that computer. i personally have no clue how his OS is (i can have an idea since he had to get another computer...) but i was asking him "how did you make it work with FAT file system?" cuz i was surious to know how it works and this was his reply: "i didn''t! i made my own file system..." (read that with a hindi accent)
now go figure!

i''m still trying to get him into game industry tho...

And Pouya keep up the good work (get that dude into games)

Idea:

If you want to make your own OS, well then, your nuts. But appart from that, you could take an open OS (like Linux) and modify it to do what you want. (smaller space req, look better, difrent file system, whatever...)

Mmmm...Operating Systems...
It''s actually quite fun trying to write an OS...you really do learn a lot, even with an ultra-super-simple OS. Ever wondered how text actually gets on the screen? Hint: Console-mode VGA memory starts at 0xB8000 . Or ever wondered how a keyboard works? Hint: you''ll need a few port access macros .

writing an OS is great fun, extremely rewarding in knowledge, and really not extremely hard. writing a GOOD OS, however, is another story entirely.

actually, they were using the macintosh operating system (yeah, can''t think of the proper name of it right now) That''s pretty funny that you didn''t realize that IMHO. Watch it again. Notice all the apple logos on the laptops? good

LOL you noticed those logos too I jsut watched the movie two weeks ago. And couldn''t stop myself laughing with all the hackers mumbo jumbo (though it doesnt sound as cool in french).
Cereal Killer is cool, though

My bet is that they made a nice Director presentation ... simple as that.

I agree 100%.

Sorry, I should have been more clear: I was only considering the possibility that Picardmsk wanted to write a GOOD OS, not a simple one.

Bill Gates thought of doing that and he did over and over again. And he still hasn''t got it right...

first of all, Bill Gates didn''t write any o those OS''s himself
secondly, Win2000 is the greatest OS I''ve ever seen
thirdly, a "good" OS is relative. you have to comapre it to the current market, not the best possible. and it IS true that win2k is at the top of the market. (Linux is debateable, take it comparing to win2k, have in mind that a "good" OS is still relative to your needs, and it encounter the factor "support")
