DirectX problems...

Hi, I have a very strange problem... Applications which use DirectX act quite weirdly on my PC. I was just given 'Advanced Animation with DirectX' by Jim Adams, but have found that running any of the included sample programs in fullscreen mode resets my computer (as if I had power cycled it) and running them in windowed mode simply brings up an error message (the standard "this program must close" one). I have noticed the same behaviour from some commercial games I have, and from some examples I have downloaded from members of this forum... Finally, running examples from "ShaderX" gives another strange message - "Your computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device". But... I *have* installed the SDK! This problem has only happened just after I reinstalled Windows XP and I'm inclined to reinstall again to (hopefully) clear it. I have tried reinstalling the SDK, drivers for my GeForce 3, and the DirectX runtime, I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas of how to get this resolved? Thanks. Oh, and merry christmas people! La la laaa, la la laaa, la la la la laaa! *cough* [EDIT] Does running DirectX applications require the SDK only, the runtime only, or both? Cheers if anyone can reply.

To run DirectX app's you only need to run-time...

Make sure you have the latest installed, if you have the SDK installed also make sure you have installed the debug runtimes. Then, under the Direct3D tab in the DirectX icon in control panel, turn up all the debug information.

I assume you get source code for the DirectX app's in the book you bought, open up the porjects in your IDE and then run them n debug mode. DirectX might tell you something which may help you solv your problem.

Regards.

This sounds like a problem un-related to the SDK, because you are experiencing it in all types of 3D applications. Instead of re-installing drivers, try downloading new ones from Nvidia. Also, upgrade to the newest version of the DX runtime, if you haven't already done so. Hopefully it's not a hardware problem with your GF3 (although there are some pretty cheap, high quality cards out right now - ie ATI 9600xt).
