Start Programs

Hm. For some reason, after the last install of XP Pro on this machine, my start menu no longer sorts by alpha. It sorts partly by date installed, and partly by type, and partly by alphabet. It's really weird, and incredibly annoying. I've had this happen before, and only fixed itself when I had to reinstall XP. How can I fix this?
Nope. Believe me, I've tried.
Also, I should add that this is under the "All Programs" section.
No, I'm doing this:

Even switching to classic view doesn't give me anything useful.
What version of Windows are you running anyways?

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder
Right click MenuOrder in the left pane, click Permissions... then click Advanced button
Remove the checkmark from the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here" entry.
In the Security dialog box that opens, click Copy and you'll be taken back to the Advanced Security Settings for MenuOrder window. Click OK and you'll return to the Permissions for MenuOrder window.
Clear the checkmark next to Full Control in both your account and all security groups where you are a member.
Do not change the Read permission.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Tested it on mine and it works.

Well, one of the two solutions worked. [smile]. I saw the right-click the name, and even though I had tried that before, I figured it was worth a shot (after rebooting with the edited registry). The sort-by-name was there! (and believe me, it wasn't before...). I can always just re-sort now that it's an option...
So, yay! You two rock!

lol. I don't think the reg change worked, but it *did* give me the ability to have the sort by name (I swear it wasn't there before!)
