I am looking for some guidance in selecting a good 3d model format. You see, I don’t have a 3d modeler/artist selected yet but development of my engine needs to go on. So in the mean time I need to select 3D format that will work for me and I’ll be able to get an artist who is able to use it. I’m a little new to this so excuse any misstatements or inaccuracies on technologies related to graphics. The two main needs for my models are skeletal animation and real-time texturing. I’m only planning on having like four different character models but using many different skins generated in real time. As for the animation, I would like to keep it in a bone/joints style to make it easier on my artist. The only other thing I need is the ability for portability. I was messing around with X files but I don’t think that format is very portable, I could be wrong though. Either way I wasn’t really happy with its setup. Any information is welcomed, Keith Is this the right form for this message? I figured this one or "game programming" but wasnt sure

You might want to take a look at the format Ogre3D uses. They separate material scripts (e.g. skins), skeletons (for animations) and meshes (actual geometry data). The format is well documented and the engine is OpenSource so you can look at the loader/converter source code to see how they use it (just don't steal it [wink]).

Good luck!
Pat
