Fried computer?

I left my computer for a bit, and when I got back it and the monitor were turned off, but my mp3 player was still charging. I turned the power strip off and on again and there was a loud pop, a flash of light from inside the case, and a strong smell of smoke (like when a light bulb blows up). I unplugged the entire power strip. I can't do more tonight because my little brother is sleeping in there. I'm worried. It probably isn't the power strip as my mp3 player was still charging, but my monitor was turned off. (And won't turn back on? I think I tried it, but I might have hit the button right next to the power button in the dark.) If the monitor is fried and not from the power strip, then the video card is also probably fried. That's only plugged into the motherboard. I'm worried about it. As long as the hard drive's fine I can buy a new computer, but my last backup to a different storage medium is a bit old. (I know to back up often, but I generally considered backups as protection against software/disk corruption and merely backed up to a different partition. I'll start backing up to my ISP webspace or another separate physical medium.) Does anyone have any ideas besides opening it up tomorrow and looking to see what's scorched? (A flash visible from outside my closed plain beige case probably scorched something.)

If you are lucky - as I was - you just need to buy a better power supply! But yea, Maega is right that your PSU went *Poof*. I'd say buy a new PSU 1st and see if your comp is fine - if so keep it - if not, salvage and move on - and learn the lesson that I learned - buy a good PSU!

Based on my extensive technical expertise, I can tell you with confidence that, according to conventional standards, it's never a good thing when your computer explodes.

Sounds to me like a capacitor detonated...I'll wager that it was in the PSU.

same thing happened to me. I was using the POS PSU that came with the case. I got a good psu and worked fine.

Yep; it was the PSU. I tried a different one and everything else worked! I was lucky; when my little brother's power supply went it took all his IDE drives with it.

My computer was actually plugged into the same outlet my brother's was when his blew. I'm using an extension cord now and my dad'll probably look at that outlet later.

I'm using a spare power supply now. My little brother had it but it belongs to my dad. Hopefully he'll give it to me or at least let me borrow it until I get a new one.

I was very lucky. Thanks all.

Well I'm glad only the PSU went! However - if the new PSU is significanlty lower than your previous PSU - I'd say do not use it for so long - otherwise you might blow that one out as well. You may just have to not use your comp until you get a new better PSU - that's what I had to do. I know its hard, but hey - I was just glad my $1000 computer I had just assembled wasn't fried [wink].

The old one was the cheap 300W PSU that came with my case. The one I have from my dad is a 400W Leadman LP6100. I'll keep it if he lets me.

Ohh no! Not the dreaded stock PSU from the case. That was the lesson I only learned once. I have yet to trust any PSU preinstalled in a case. As for the new PSU - sounds great!
