ok i went into the #gamedev chat and asked a question about my code. and nobody there wanted to bother helping me and all they did was say google it, and that your code is the most screwed up code i have ever seen. how the heck is google going to help me with my code other than use google to help me find another C++ mirc chat that will help me and why do they haft to be so rude about my code i know that it is screwed up that is why i am asking for help. all i am requesting is that the channel operators, and the people in the chat look back and reilize that you where in the same spot as i am now and needed help becuz your new to programming. and it is very agrivating when nobody will help you. and plz dont say google it becuz that just pisses people off.

What nickname did you go by? I'm trying to find a log of the conversation.

When people in the chat tell you to google, they mean for you to google on whatever topic you require help with. For example, if you were having trouble with the pathfinding AI for a game, you could google the search terms "C++ pathfinding tutorials."

Also, I noticed in your post that there are numerous spelling/grammatical errors. This isn't really a major problem, but you will tend to get a slightly better response if you fix it up a bit, so that may be something to keep in mind.

Other general advise on getting help that you probably already know, but I'll list anyways:
-Be polite, people don't have to help you.
-Be clear about what you'd like to know. Ask a focussed question on a specific topic if possible.
-Try to solve the problem yourself first - you'll generally learn more, and will be better equipped to ask a less general question.

All that being said, I wasn't present, and don't have access to logs of the channel, so you may very well have followed the above guidelines, but I just thought I'd take a moment to offer the advise in case you hadn't.

Good luck with whatever it is you're currently working on.

You've got to be kidding me...

Here's a log of the time you spent in the room, with irrelevant parts removed.

18:59 < cpp-junkie> hello
18:59 <@Fruny> HI!
19:00 < cpp-junkie> i need help with some code
19:00 < cpp-junkie> but the paste site is down
19:00 < Seriema> cpp-junkie: cool

19:00 < Promit> cpp-junkie, rafb.net/paste
19:00 < cpp-junkie> http://www.rafb.net/paste
19:01 < Promit> ok, you could've just typed it into the browser, instad of here + click
19:01 < cpp-junkie> ok
19:01 < cpp-junkie> http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/L9nRe384.html
19:02 < cpp-junkie> it says that there is something wrong with the jumble[index1] = jumble[index2];
19:02 < cpp-junkie> hey fruny i havnt seen you on in a while
19:02 <@Superpig> lol
19:02 < cpp-junkie> you helped me with some programming exercises once
19:03 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - your fault then, not mine. I do show up regularly here. :)
19:03 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - Yeah, you and hundreds of other people who come here ;)
19:03 < vertexnormal> cpp-junkie: While he was helping you, he was also insinuating subliminal messages. You've become Fruny's slave, maybe even Fruny's bitch. Bow down. :D
19:03 < cpp-junkie> ok can i plz get some help http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/L9nRe384.html
19:04 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - not if you don't ask a question.
19:04 < cpp-junkie> i did lol
19:04 < cpp-junkie> whats wrong with this code
19:04 < cpp-junkie> http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/L9nRe384.html
19:04 <@Fruny> That's not a question.
19:04 < cpp-junkie> it says that something is wrong with the
19:05 < cpp-junkie> jumble[index1] = jumble[index2];
19:05 < cpp-junkie> it highlights that in red
19:05 < cpp-junkie> syntax error before '{' token
19:05 < cpp-junkie> i mean [
19:05 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - you forgot a semicolon on the previous line
19:06 < cpp-junkie> this is my first game ever
19:06 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - you forgot a semicolon on the previous line
19:06 <@Fruny> Line 49
19:08 * Fruny beats cpp-junkie senseless with a semicolon
19:16 < cpp-junkie> ok i got another question if i wanted to make my game ask the person if they wanted to play agian
19:16 < cpp-junkie> whould i just make a char playAgain = 'y';
19:17 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - if you feel like it.
19:17 < cpp-junkie> and make a while loop that says while (playAgain = 'y'){ while((guess != theWord) && (guess != "quit")){....}}
19:17 <@Fruny> cpp-junkie - you should really start by breaking out your program into functions.
19:17 < cpp-junkie> so that would work
19:18 < Black_Moons> just note that != dosent work on char arrays :P
19:25 < cpp-junkie> is there like a keyword that you can tell a loop to re loop its self
19:25 < cpp-junkie> like if i where to say want to play again
19:25 < Asheh2> continue
19:25 < cpp-junkie> if (guess == 'y')
19:25 <@Superpig> PLEASE ABSTAIN FROM NOT RELOOPING
19:25 < cpp-junkie> continue;
19:25 < Asheh2> continue; <
19:25 <@Superpig> oh, wait you're not using Intercal
19:26 < cpp-junkie> would that work
19:28 < cpp-junkie> ok it isnt working right
19:29 < cpp-junkie> ok here is the link for what it looks like http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/WaQI8O89.html

At no point did anyone tell you to 'Google it.' People - including myself - were telling other people to use google, but in none of these cases was anybody talking to you.

The help policy in #gamedev is similar to the one in these forums; it centers around three rules: one, don't ask to ask, just ask; two, don't just post code and say "whats wrong with this," ask specific questions (which you did, after a while); and three, be prepared to wait for an answer. I had just fired up your code in a browser window when you proclaimed our collective uselessness and left. Visitors are also strongly advised not to use lazy AOL-style abbreviations for words like 'please,' because it demonstrates a lack of effort to communicate on your part, and pisses people off.

We are not there to act as your technical support group. We are unlikely to spend our time trawling through your code if you do not ask us to look at specific parts of it, and we are unlikely to spend time explaining something that, with a little thought, you could figure out for yourself. You are also not the only person asking questions in the room; you may have to wait for us to finish talking to someone else before you recieve our attention (as was the case for me).
