Is there any collective resource online that can tell me the total power consumption or of the individual parts of my pc. My system: Athlon 64 3800+ Asus A8v 1Gb Matched Pair OCZ PC3500 DDR 1x 120GB ATA 1x 120GB SATA 1x 40GB ATA ATI Radeon 9700Pro 1x Standard DVD-ROM 1x Liteon CDRW 1x PCI 5.1 Creative Sound Card 1x WinTv Go TV-In card My power supply is 550W. I don't know if anyone here knows of anyway i can find the total power consumption out? Thanx in advance. ace

I've used this page in the past.

It estimates your power consumption to be 331 watts.

That's pretty cool. Thanks mutex!

I just manually add current in amperes drawn from 5V, same with 12v, etc.(it is written how much current each device consume) and check if currents is OK. Then it may be needed to check if total power (current_from_5 * 5 + current_from_12 * 12) is OK too. (with *some* power supplys you can't draw maximal current from both 5 and 12). It is safer, as i don't risk to overload 5V by having devices consume too big portion from 5V , same with 12V .(-5,-12, etc. should be OK as IIRC them is used only on mobo). But i'm is usually too precise, probably it doesn't really matter...
but i know that if 5V is underloaded and 12V isn't, with some power supplies that sucks, 12V can go as low as 10V, or even lower.

Also, during startup the hard drive sucks extra power on the 12V line. If you have a large number of hard drives, then the voltage may drop too low on startup and cause problems. So in the power estimator link here, the hd power(25W) is an average, not a max.

Thanx Drew,

Worth a fair bit as well...

I guess my only question is.. why in the heck would you think 550W wouldn't cut it? that's plenty for just about everything.

i've got a 400W supply with 4 hard drives, and no problems.

Well ive had problems with power supplies in the past, but mainly i wanted to be sure.

It did turn out to be a fork though!

Hard drives have never consumed much power. Its really the CPU that consumes the most, and then the videocard. I've had old computers with 250W PSUs and 6 hard drives.
