My 20 gig iPod came in today. I connected it to my Windows PC through USB. It had to format. For those that had to format, how long did it take for you? I'm going on something like 2 and a half hours now :X

It took less than a minute. Then I configured iTunes so that I could add songs manually.

Wonder what is up with mine then :(

From what I've heard, its probably a better idea to use firewire over USB if possible.

I'm not sure if it's related to your problem, but its something to think about.

It took less than a minute for me as well. But I used FireWire.

I disconnected it and let the iPod update restore the iPod.

Went quick this time.

Songs are transferring over :D

Good. :) USB 2.0 generally has a higher top speed than FireWire/400 but FireWire keeps its max speed a lot better in my experience.

My buddy just got an iPod mini and was formatting through usb and had the exact same problem. He sat there for 2 hours and it still wasnt done, so he unplugged it and plugged it into a different usb port on the back. Tried to format it again and it was done in minutes. It seems to be a common problem with usb...

Perhaps the different port was USB 2.0 and the first one wasn't? My motherboard is quite new but has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 normal ones which are a lot slower. Just a thought.

On a similar note, is anyone else finding it frustrating not being able to have sub genres in the tag info? Ideally I'd want a genre-tree type thing, so I could choose to play either general electronic for example, or if I wanted to refine that for a specific mood, drum and bass.

Anyone with similar grumbles?

I just tend to put mine on 'Shuffle Songs' and leave it. But then I only have about 50 songs on it anyway.

Mine didn't take long. I was worried at first because it threw a load of errors at me when I put it into a USB 1.0 socket - but I ignored them and it worked fine. Formatting itself took no more than five minutes, though the entire get-started process - which I have to say, sucks severely - took me more like 20. Plug into the computer, download updates, plug into another socket, launch iTunes, check for more updates, download and apply updates, reflash fireware... gah. Crazy.

I just wish I kept better track of what I labelled the artist as. I just use Shuffle songs now because I'm too lazy to switch what I'm listening to when it finishes and I have enough songs total that I have to stop it before it stops.

I still have to disable the iTunes from running in the background, waiting for me to plug in my iPod so it can take over.

Woah. I'm glad I got my iAudio, then; upgrading the firmware was a piece of cake. It's about the size of an iPod, but it has its screen on an external remote. It also has microphone, line in, and fm radio, though, and it's a standard USB Hard Drive, so I can use it just fine with Linux.
