OhboyohboyohBOY! They're doin' it, they're DOIN' it! In-game screenshot (from Bioshock, of course)! I don't usually look forward to games, but a System Shock style "sequel" (different company, possibly a slightly different game) is definitely something to keep fingers crossed for! Don't know what System Shock (read The Most Underrated Game In The History Of Gaming (TM)) is? Get System Shock 2 legally here - all you need to do is type in the code from the banner into one of the in-text edit fields and press go. It's a 148 MB zip file so don't expect a miracle if you're on dial-up. If you liked Doom 3, but felt that there wasn't enough of an RPG feeling in it, get SS2 and experience the FPS/RPG of the future - HalfLife quite frankly sucked compard to this game. Then again, System Shock isn't for evetryone. NOTE: to the best of my knowledge, underdogs is NOT a warez site and the downloads provided there are all legitimate. I will therefore claim no responsibility if things have changed for reasons unknown to me.

That's not ingame, it's a conceptual image.

BioShock - Concept art

Well, you've actually see it before, but this image has recently been upgraded from "Concept Art" to "in-engine screenshot".
Sweet! This game is going to look good!

edit: Ha!

System Shock- Classic! Game!
I got it about 6 years ago on CD in a bargain bin. The one problem that I did find is that the graphics are uber pixelated which adds to the retroness of it but gives you a headache after a while and when it says theres an armed droid infront of, you have to take it on faith as its difficult to actually see anything through the blotch.
Don't take this as putting down a game that was made well over a decade ago because it is a MUST PLAY!
Scared me to hell in some places (usually because it said there was a killer droid infront of me but i coulded actually work out which shape it was :) )

No, head ache graphics aside, its a truely brilliant experience.

[Edit:

underdogs may not be WAREZ but its a leap to say they are totally legit. The thing is with abandonware- its a bit of a grey area as far as the law is concerned. The interllectual owners havn't yet specified that their game be taken down. Hell, some of the developers love seeing their old brain childs being played again by a new generation. You download Abandon at your discretion. On the other hand, underdogs are good because they do respect the games as works of art of a forgotten era, not just slamming up pirated games. However, saying they are totally legit is said on shakey ground.
Scope out their FAQ for more info on how abandonware is illegal (grey area more than anything).

Also, IMO, the most underated game of all time is either the original Syndicate or TerraNova.
SS had a good following. Just it was way back in the day.

Dismayed about the low-res textures? Get SHTUP and play System Shock 2 with high (medium, really) resolution textures (reworked from 128x128 to 256x256). There's an upgrade for creature models as well, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

lol, no I'm talking about the original system shock; The one made yonks ago. Not SS2.
Its safe to say that the original SS will be stuck with block.
BTW, all you die-hards, i know its a very old game and I'm not putting it down, its still brilliant- i'm just warning people that if they do find a copy to expect pure blockage of pixels since it was made around the time of Doom (?).

Oh, System Shock. It's really a must-play-it game. I enjoyed it very much, although the graphics was no miracle. However music and sounds were great!

As far as BioShock is concerned, it is not a sequel to SS2, to my knowledge. It will just use concepts and similar gamaplay like SS2 had. And that makes very attractive for me, although would not object against SS3 coming to the scene!

System Shock is abandonware. Abandonware is illegal, but you won't find too many people with moral issues about it. System Shock 2 is not abandonware - that's the official word from the developers - it can still be bought. So it's definately illegal to download. Those 'screenshots' are in-engine shots - ie that is what the engine is capable of rendering, but who knows at what FPS.

Excellent!!! SS2 is one of the most underated games I know.

On a related note; I bought system shock 2 ages ago for my old computer and loved it, although had to play it with low settings and framerate. Now I've got a excellent setup, but windows XP and have tried all the recommended tricks to get it working, but it still freezes on the first level after ~1min of gameplay. Anyone got any extra tips to get it going? I'd so badly love to go back and kick it's ass!

You're a lucky guy mlambert, as I was not even able to run under win XP! If had wanted to play it, I had to have double boot with win 98SE.

Use the link I provided above - it works 100%. Get the high resolution textures from the link I posted below and search for something like "system shock 2 rebirth" on Google to get the upgraded models. Do all of the above and just enjoy :).

If you have any further problems, please post them here and I'll do my best to help you out.

SS2 Worked fine for me on XP when I installed the latest patch for it.

I didn't think System Shock 2 was all that hot compared to SS1.

SS1 was the first PC game that honestly and truly scared me. Totally immersive. I had heard there was an OpenGL recreation under production; I hope it's true. I can't wait to be playing System Shock on my modern Mac.

Dude - you just publically admitted that you're not using Windows. What the hell were you thinking?

Actually - the fact that you mentioned that you were using a Mac and not a PC struck a weird chord with me as just the other day I made a mental note that with most (if not all) of the lecturers that I have (those that use a computer) and in just about every movie they're using a computer in, the half-eaten fruit always sticks out first.

It seems like there's a conspiracy agains Microsoft, but in a very weird way.

Sorry, but you've been banned (temporarily, though). File downloads are no longer possible until your ban is lifted. This ban is caused by you having more than one file transfer going on at the time (The number:8).Your ranking is: Accidental Leecher.

Hehehe. The first time Firefox has failed me. [smile]
Guess I'll have to wait a bit to play SS2...

You can't have more than 1 active downloads at any given time. It's literally rubbed in your face on just about every page, so it's not Firefox that is to blame. Wake up, Neo, and read the scribbly things :).

Fucked if I know. I notice that a lot of graphics types and video types use the Macintosh, maybe they just yank a spare one off the design floor and use it as a prop.

I think that there are much cooler looking computers out there than your average Powerbook. Hell, with some duct tape and paint I could probably make a PC tower look way better than stock. Lazy prop department, I assume.

And hey, as for my platform tendencies, OS X has all the goodies of Linux (i.e. functional command prompt) with none of the annoying bullshit (i.e. everything else). [smile]

The System Shock Hack Project is unfortunately dead. The Citadel Conversion Project (recreate SS1 in the Dark Engine) is also pretty dead. There seems to be another similar project though.

I'm actually not entirely sure what happened. I didn't intentionally start eight seperate downloads, but I've heard that Firefox connects multiple times to the same server to speed up downloads. (At least from webpages, I didn't think it'd be the case when downloading files..)
I read the warnings, just didn't fully realize Firefox would try to connect eight times to the server to make things faster. Ah well... You live you learn. [smile]

EDIT: Nice, ban's lifted.
