Title says it all. I lost my job at my college's IT department. Apparently, lack of motivation played a part. Tell me this, how are you supposed to be motivated working at a college over winter break? It isn't enough that I have to drive half an hour both ways to get there and slave my ass of for eight hours a day in a dead library? No complaints were filed against me, no warning, no performance review, nothing. Just a 5 minute sitdown with my supervisor, a quick little chat, and a nice inter-office memo to make it official. What sucks even more is that this is the first job I have even been 'fired' for. They wouldn't even say that, they... "let me go." No warning, just "good bye." Now it looks like I may have to make pizza in a gas station... For reading this post, I offer you a picture of Donald Trump. [/rant]

Wow, they fired you. I had an IT job at a college that was an hour a day lab assistant job. It was so boring I'd fall asleep. Then I decided to just clock in and go back to my dorm, and then clock out on time. They never fired me, but I didn't care to reapply the next quarter. Boring jobs suck. At another job I would create games and other apps because they didn't give me enough stuff to do.

8 hours a day for an college IT job is unimaginable for me.

Don't get mad -- get proactive. Ask your (former) supervisor for suggestions on how to improve, then ask someone with a favorable opinion of your work if he or she would be willing to write a recommendation letter for another position elsewhere.

At least I didn't go apeshit or something. You could see it in my supervisors eyes, she was expecting me to go nuts. Instead, I just shook her hand, gave her my name tag, smiled, and walked out the door.

She said she would be more than happy to write me a recomendation. I had a good working relationship with all the employees there. Oh well.

Its too bad lack of motivation is a reflection on the management team (or admin in your case), and a reflection on the work environment, not the actual employee. Im sorry to hear about your misfortune, take it with a grain of salt(what does that actually mean?), and move on. Sounds like even they know it wasnt a good excuse to let you go, do you think it had anything to do with a 40 hour job that took place in a dead library? They probably just didnt want to pay you, or some other underlying reason..

Heres to looking for a new job!

Sorry to hear dude. I'm sure you can get a job someplace that will use your talents to their fullest. I've been "fired" from jobs before. Its mostly not your fault. If they had given a damn, they might have sat you down and talked about your "issues" before they just flat out canned your ass without so much as a reason. Either that, or someone else sucked enough dick to nail your job. Who knows. Keep your chin up and hope for the best.

Well, the news only gets better. One of my friends just lost his job at exactly the same time. He worked at the local computer shop. He got fired cause he was working to slow or something. I'm going to do the only honorable thing.

That job is mine. We'll see...

At least you didn't get fired because you were "overqualified". That's the worst. In the midst of applying for internships last year, a company had extended me an offer. A week later, they wrote back to say that, in fact, their letter was in error and that they were "un-hiring" me (yes, they used the word "un-hiring"). It went on to say that I was "overqualified" for the position and not "a good match at this time". Having a company tell you you're "overqualified" is like having a girl tell you she just wants to be friends.

I've seen that happen before, $friend_1 says to $friend_2 who's looking for a job to apply at his company. Said company fires (wrongfully, I think too), $friend_1, and immiediatly hires $friend_2 in exact same position a week later. Weird stuff, but goodluck. :)

I think you hit the nail on the head right there. If you both want/need to be working....try to swap. At least for the short term, until you both find something better.

Off topic because nes8bit posted:

There is a guy that comes into the store where I work with the last name nesbitt.

I just wanted to share.

Onto the topic:

It sucks that you got fired. It could be worse though. You aren't stressing about bills. You could have lost the job with bills already piled up. :X

You know, that's the kind of job I want: to get paid to sit at a computer and do whatever the hell I want, and carry out a once-a-month responsibility that comes along. I'm glad they have those nowadays. Time to start looking for one near me.

(other than the library that I already pretty much do that at, without pay; it amazes me how people can find ways to fuck up computers; the most common complaint is that the "screen is rotated!" - the gfx cards have some obscure hotkey alt-ctrl-arrow key that rotates the screen output... grr)
