Doom3 Performance

Here's one of the weirdest things I've seen: Doom3 runs like crap on this computer: ASUS nForce2 motherboard AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 768 MB RAM ATI Radeon 9200 SE It runs on average 15-20 fps, and gets slower when I look at more polys, or I open doors and two areas are connected. However, Doom3 runs SWEET on this OLD computer: Intel Pentium 4 1.8 ghz 256 MB RAM ATI Radeon 9200 SE (same video card) It averages 40-50 fps! It doesn't change no matter WHAT kind of area I'm in. (Even on High quality it runs the same) = I really want to figure out why the FIRST compute runs so slow, while it is obviously better. And it seems to be like a CPU problem too, but it runs on a crappier CPU. All my other games rock the socks in the first computer...Half Life 2, etc.

Have you installed your nforce chipset drivers? If not, that'd cause a MJAOR slowdown because windows essentially wouldn't know how to use the AGP slot very well and many accelerations would be off.

I believe I have, and I will attempt again to see if there's any perforance increase.

I asked my friend about it, and he said that the latter machine is more balanced, while the former may have some bottlenecks. But I don't see where [sad]

If it doesnt change then im guessing that either the game (or drivers) is changing the quality of the processing dynamically to speed up peformance (badly worded I know) or theres a bug in the FPS counter:)

Heh, no bug. It feels ultra smooth.

But, I installed nForce drivers and I experienced a little bit of gain. Now it's 20-30, and that's more playable than before ^_^.

Thanks, I'll live with the framerate I have now. After all, it's only an ATI Radeon 9200! [grin]

No way Doom3 on high gets more than 10fps on that second computer, the game probably switches to low. What about the advanced settings? Do you have all those turned on? Try to turn them off.
On my computer: P4 Prescott @ 3.7Ghz + GeForce 6600GT PCIe, Doom3 runs like 40-60fps on high with everything turned on.

Start | Run | 'dxdiag' | Display Tab
See if you have Direct3D acceleration, DirectDraw acceleration, and AGP Texture Acceleration.

If so, close that down and go to display properties (Control Panel | Display | Settings tab | Advanced
Look around and see if you have 'VSync', 'Vertical Sync', or something like that turned on (or set to 'application preference' or something like that). If so, set it to 'forced off' and see if that helps

But Doom3 uses openGL so why would Direct3D settings matter? :S

Pretty much everything in Doom3 except the core rendering system was done in DX.

Really the 3rd one was the one that matters (AGP Texture Acceleration). If it isn't enabled, it (generally) means your agp chipset driver isn't installed properly and that applies to all graphics acceleration. If the other DX accelerations weren't enabled, it could also indicate more general problems, but it has equal chance of being a problem with driver's dx support or your dx install

I'm going to have to second that. I've used 2 Radeon 9200 Cards for non-gaming rigs and there is no way. They are fine cards for what they are. Cheap with basic 3D support just in case, but they are not a DOOM3 card. Fine for people playing games older than 2 years but not DOOM3. The game chokeing major gaming rigs around the planet. I couldn't get a satisfactory Frame rate on Max Payne with it.Keep in mind I'm uoober sensitive to frame rates 60 is the low end of what I can be pleased with. I don't see how anyone could call 40-50 "ultra smooth" To me 60 is fairly smooth. Ultra and silky smooth don't kick in until around 75-80.

Update the graphics drivers to the latest version. I got an average of a 10FPS boost in Doom3 from updating the drivers.

Nah, that machine could handle it. As long as you have the stencil shadows off, most other things don't cause many problems. My machine is crappier than that, and gets an average of 30FPS.

I believe my computer is a product of Hell (tm), that's why it runs so good. Finally, my 50$ is making returns - I've reached the hell levels, and for some reason they're actually enoyable. Multiplayer's a blast too. If only some mods would actually get completed...
