Windows stealing focus

This is MAJOR pet peeve of mine. I''ll be in the middle of navigating a menu or perhaps typing an address into a ''Location'' field and another window will steal the input focus, completely disrupting what I was doing. Maybe the dialer pops up and notifies me of something, or even a webpage steals the focus. Anybody else bothered by this as much as I am?

the worst thing is when you''re getting hot in your code and just typing all that you have in mind and suddenly an icq message pops up: "can I ask you a question?"
ahh, you didn''t give me any choice buddy, did you?

This is a *definate* peeve of mine...you set one app to load up, then go back to the other one, and the new one gets jealous and steals the spotlight. The only thing worse is the ever-damnable AOL Instant Messenger. I despise it, but ALL of my friends here use it (none of them are programmers and, thus, have never even heard of icq...or if they have they''ve got two more digits than I do in their icq number)...the absolute worst program for stealing the input focus. Someone sends you an instant messange and POOF it pops up RIGHT in your face. So if you''re typing a line of code, BAM the message comes up and you speedily finish your line and hit enter before you realize it, sending some unintelligible response to the goofball that messaged you while you were working. ICQ was so much better about that. *sighes*

Anyway, there''s my rant for the week. =) Thanks for listening.

Its really a pain.

pouya > i set my ICQ so the mssgs dont pop up over my screen, they stay down in the teaksbar till i let opn them.

i think its really annoying when u are typing in a URL in IE or NS and a popup window comes up and takes the focus away.

It makes me happy to know others suffer as I do.

And it''s one of the big reasons that I like working in X-windows better.

That can be easily resolved. In the ICQ preferences, select the [status] tab and check the "Show messages in tray in all status modes" option. Then on the [events] tab, uncheck the "popup response dialog" option. This should prevent that from happening anymore. Instead, you will get a flashing icon in the system tray when you get a message.

There''s an option in TweakUI to prevent applications form stealing focus. When it''s on, apps trying to steal your focus just flash in the task bar.

Yes, this is realy a bad problem.

I''m just wondering: Is there another shell (is X-Win available as a windoes shell?) that you can run over windows, instead of explorer, that will handle windows popping up. Or is that handled by windows and not explorer (or the shell or whatever)
