What's up all, I am a experienced application developer(about 8 years, about 2+ with .NET/C#). I have created many windows and web apps, so I know my way around code. I have played games since the golden days of pong :-) Would LOVE to start getting into creating them. I bought the "Mangaed DirectX 9" book cause it seemed like the best out there at the time for .NET. Most of the tech articles that I have read on this site are dealing with C++ code. I know C++ is the standard in the industry and I am willing to learn and use it, but it just seems like a step back from using C#... So I figured I would come to the .NET area and ask you guys... What are some good .NET game dev sites for me that would have articles dealing with developing games with C#(or VB.NET, easy enough to convert). Also, are there there any other books out there that you would recommend. Thanks VERY much in advance!

Welcome...

I am the same, but I am moving from System Administration and Database admin (about 8 years exp) to game dev. Over the time I have created Windows and some Linux apps to assist in my jobs...

Now Programming soly in .net (Both vb and c#), I purchased the Managed Kickstart, and have just recently got the next one "Begining 3D Game Programming". With the first you will have to note that it was written for the first version of managed directX, and to use it with the newer SDK Releases you will need to make some changes. I am at present trying to document the changes that I am making (Mykre's Space) if you get to parts that I have not noted yet can you forward them on.

For resources, there are a few out there...
The ZBuffer - Good Referance Site
DevMaster - Link to Game Engines
Managed World

Craig Andera's Weblog

There are Others, if you go to ZBuffer you can get the information needed.

Here's a book I own.

Title: Introduction to 3D Game Engine Design Using DirectX9 and C#
Author: Lynn T. Harrison

I think it has some pretty good stuff in it.

Hey, THANKS guys!!! REALLY appreciate it! I will pick up both of the books and check out the sites!

Just curious, what dev environment are you using to write your code for the games? I am currently using VS.NET 2003, but if you know of something better for game development, could ya please pass it on :-)

Thanks VERY MUCH again!!!

I'm using VS.NET 2003 as well. I use it mostly because that is what I use for work and I am most familiar with it.

I used the free version of Borland C# Builder before I got VS.NET. It's nice and you can't beat the price. You might try it out just to see how you like it.

I don't think it really matters what you use as far as games goes. Whatever you can be most productive with.

Good luck!

Remember you can always go with the Microsoft Express products (Also Free), although they are still in beta, by the time you are ready to produce a customer ready application they should be out of beta and in production.

Thanks guys!
Since I also work mostly with the VS.NET 2003, I think I will stick with that for now.
I have downloaded the Borland C++ 5.5 tools and played with them, but they are just command-line tools and not really a dev environment.

thanks again!

Hey Mykre,(Or anyone else that might be able to help)...I went to your "space", and it will come in handy...
Since, you just went through the same But I for some reason (I am sure it is just my PC, my work one is HORRIBLE), I keep getting the "System.OutOfMemory" exception when I create the "device" object...
Did you run into this? If so how did you fix it? Or is it just my crappy work machine? LOL!!!
I haven't run into the ever with all of the apps that I have created so I am stumped...

Thanks again!
