First make sure that NetBIOS is bound to TCP/IP on the network you want to work on. NetBIOS can be accessed over ports 137-139/tcp and 138/udp. I don't believe that Java supports any of the other NetBIOS transport protocols. From there RFCs 1001 and 1002 specify the NetBIOS protocol over TCP/IP.

thnx, i also found the rfc documents 1001 and 1002 of netbios. i just don''t see how i can communicate with it through a socket.

for example, if i want to test it through telnet, i open a connection on, for example 138 and enter a character. when i do this, it disconnects after it gives some echo-characters.

is there some documentation/examples other then the rfc''s?

Really, the description of the protocol doesn''t get much more specific than RFC 1002.

Possibly the reason that you aren''t getting very far with telnet is that many of the session response packets are only 32 bits long. Which is only 4 characters. And NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) I believe initiates a new connection for every TCP mode communication. And that''s not including the UDP packets.

MSDN will give some additional documentation on the FSM for NetBIOS resolution if you search for NetBT.

To be quite honest it''s really much to painful to use NetBIOS if you aren''t going to use an NCB or even TDI interface.
