ahh windows 5.1 my old dirty friend. Completely off all topics - Does anyone have anything to contribute towards getting that damn "Safely Remove Hardware" off the system tray, it's been bugging me for too long. Also what else about xp is annoying & has a cure? How about that big partition that is uses on your hd when it installs - lets get rid of that. Well okay sadly I do want it installed (maybe you'd better shoot me now). But I do enjoy beating it into shape with the users equivilent of large pointy shaped weaponry. So suggestions on making windows just that little bit more bareable, or prehaps complaints of your own that could be remedied?

Safely remove hardware usually goes away after you unplug all the USB devices, or remove all the hardware they list. So the obvious solution is to remove all the listed hardware.

Oh, and tray icon hiding exists for a reason.

The hardware device is the modem
& the only way I seem to be able to achieve "tray icon hiding" is by enabling "Hide inactive icons". Somehow I feel like I'm losing either way. I don't want the os hiding icons according to it's own (evil twisted)mind. Oh & btw I've tried enabling that & setting "always show" for all my icons except that, but windows managed to keep dropping the settings for certain icons (didn't seem to recognise that it was the same instance upon each bootup)

non or related thoughts?

You can set each individual icon to it's own always hide/hide when inactive, etc. state. Hit customize under the taskbar and start menu properties.

The operating system doesn't usually install itself into an exclusive partition unless you tell it to do that. I generally prefer one big drive over many smaller ones anyway.

Aye, I have two hard drives, and mount one as C:\ and the other as C:\Storage so I only see the one disk.

As for "Safely Remove Hardware" - that's only there for certain things, such as USB disk drives and the like. I don't know if you can get rid of it without hiding it in the "Notification Area" settings.
What do you mean "that big partition"?

i think he might be referring to the backup partition that many oems are setting up these days.

i dont find XP to be annoying at all. just take some time to check out all the options and configure things how you like. my only real complaint is the way MS has decided to fuck up menus. hate highlighting new items in the start menu and i really hate when programs like word compress all the menus to include only the most commonly used items.

Yep, those are a couple of my pet peeves too. I really wish they'd stop pimpinp-up thier interfaces, often without adding functionality. I shudder at the thought of the impending MSN7 release.

As for 'fixing' up XP somewhat, some things you can do include:
1. Switch to 'classic' start menu and/or folder views.
2. MS release several 'powertoys' which you can use to add functionality or tweak settings. Tweak UI has some useful options.
3. Replace the shell (if you can be bothered/feel the need). I use Aston, although it's worth noting that this isn't a free shell-replacement (there are plenty around if you look though).
4. Replace the filemanager (if you can be bothered/feel the need). I havn't tried this myself, so I can't make any recommendations.
5. Use 'Virtual Desktops' to clean up the taskbar and/or organise/hide windows. In addition to the many standalone apps, MS have a powertoy for this.
6. Replace your browser with another such as Firefox (free) or Opera (commercial).

One thing i really hate is the way your drives just get progressively more and more fragmented. It seems to be all down to that damn "System Volume Information" directory that can't be moved during a defrag. At the moment my main windows partition is on about 20% fragmentation and running a defrag does nothing to this figure. They should at least have something that you can schedule for the next restart so the defrag is done before windows starts and all the files get locked (like chkdsk)(maybe there is but i haven't found it). The only way is to use 3rd party utils or just format the partition and reinstall everything.

Well as for the partition I meant the space it uses thus the thing itself.

I don't want "Hide inactive icons" on for the reasons above - it damnwell hides stuff & I can't stop it for a few things

If the OS has its own evil twisted mind, why trust your data to it or run it? ;)

Tray icon hiding works just fine for me.
