reboot!!??!!

Original Post
My new computer I custom built mysteriously reboots whenever I run extremely graphics intensive applications. (HL2, Doom3, etc) I'm running them on ultra high settings so I don't know if my graphics card maybe can't handle it but I wouldn't think an underpowered video card would make my computer reboot. I updated the driver and it still happens. I have a 6600 GT. Oh yeah what's that site that has the awsome desktop backgrounds someone posted it a while ago but I can't find it.
For more reminiscing on the awesomeness that is ReBoot, see the Wikipedia entry. The opening paragraph sums it all up quite nicely:
Quote:
ReBoot is a Canadian animated television series for children produced by Mainframe Entertainment, noted for being the first completely computer animated television series.
The setting, which seems to been inspired by the Disney film, Tron, is in the inner world of a computer in a city called Mainframe. It is populated primarily by binomes, little creatures that either represent 1's or 0's, and a handful of Sprites who are primarily humanoid creatures of more complex design and are the main characters of the series. ReBoot is considered by many as one of the greatest computer animated cartoons ever.

How many watts is your PSU?
if it isn't the powersupply:
right click my computer -> properties -> advanced tab -> 'start up and recovery' settings -> system failure untick 'automatically reboot'
This will enable blue screen of deaths. [smile]
it may give a bit more information, eg, it might say that nv*.dll has failed. Or it might be utterly useless.
If it doesn't blue screen after this change, then it's very likly to be the power supply.

My psu is 500 watts so I don't think it's that. I logged my temperatures and the cpu is running around 105 F before it reboots. The monitor turns off first so I think it's something to do with my video card. My friend said that the fan may not be turning and I have to "jump start" it by turning it with my finger to get it started. This seems dubious as I have never heard of having to do that but I will try. I'm beginning to think that it is an overheating problem.
same here! [grin]
Does it only restart when running 3D games, especially in fullscreen mode (as if you'd do anything else)?
If so, it could be caused by the motherboard and video card having problems, do the restarts happen completely randomly or generally after about the same time period?
I know for example that newer video cards (namely ATI cards from what I've read) can have this happen if installed on VIA chipset motherboards, and likely other motherboards too.
I had this problem and mine would restart randomly if anything 3D was running fullscreen for more than a minute or so, even screensavers.
This isn't likely your problem, it is like others said probably something to do with heat or PSU issues. 105 sounds pretty high, high enough to fry a P3 at least, but I'm assuming you're using something a bit more advanced than that :)
Might need to up the CPU fan, or install a new case fan or something.

My first home built PC acted up a lot. I deduced that it was because I purchased cheap components. It could be an issue with your RAM among the other problems posted. Does your event viewer show anything unusual?
yes. memtest86 = good. I found my random reboot with it. A tiny sputum of memory that was dead.
then run the Ultimate Boot CD utilities, like the CPU stress test, and the hard disk tests. Memtest86 is on that CD too.
the CDs bootup automatically and do not rely on any windows stuff (so no driver issues).
If it's a CPU or memory problem, it will come up pretty clear.
Run MBM5 (motherbord monitor), or any other monitoring utilities that should have been shipped with your mobo. They will log the temperatures, voltages, all of that for you. When the machine crash, then you can have a look at the log. They will also warn you for a potential problem.
I don't know any specific stress tests for video cards, but if you can find one, that would be very useful.
Your motherboard may have a automatic shut-off feature, that reboot the machine in case of overheating. Check in the bios.
When the machine reboots. Go straight into the BIOS and check out the temperature right away. If it was overheating, then the temp should still be pretty high.
