STLPort Problems

Hey all. I reinstalled windows recently, and I've just got round to reinstalling MSVC 6.0. I downloaded the VC++ 2003 Toolkit, so I can get the optimizing compiler, and I copied the compiler files to my MSVC bin directory. I know its worked, since I can compile projects with optimizations, and the version of MSVC 6 I have (standard), doesn't allow optimizations. So, I came to install STLPort-4.6.2, which I just downloaded, and I get this error: ..\\stlport\stl\_new.h(65) : error C2873: 'set_new_handler' : symbol cannot be used in a using-declaration NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'cl.exe' : return code '0x2' Stop. I tried to build the makefile with nmake vc71.mak. Has anyone had any similar problems? I can't seem to get this to work at all... Cheers, Steve

I remember having the same error, but I can't reproduce it anymore. Did you uncomment _STLP_NO_OWN_IOSTREAMS in stl_user_config.h? If you didn't, stlport requires some additional steps to setup so maybe you could try this.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

With MSVC6 i used the file vc6 and not vc71
'nmake -fvc6.mak clear all'
(only an idea...)

Did you read the INSTALL file? you only need to build STLport if you want there implemenation of C++ I/O streams (which are better & faster than vc6 apparently i wouldn't be surprised either),

other-wise you can use STLport as is they will wrap & use your compiler's imp of I/O streams for that you just need to do:

1. change to the directory "src"2. nmake -f vc6.mak prepare3. uncomment the macro _STLP_NO_OWN_IOSTREAMS setting in the file: "stlport/stl_user_config.h"

if you do want to make a build then for a vc6 build its:

1. copy vc6.mak makefile2. nmake clean all3. nmake install

Should I be using the vc6 or vc71 make file? I had MSVC 6.0, but I'm using the 7.1 compiler with it.
I'll try building without the iostreams in a moment, thanks.

Yay, its all working again. I just got rid of the VC 7.1 compiler, since I can't debug with it anyway (the VC 6 IDE doesn't understand the debug symbols).

Thanks for the replies

I know you've sorted it out but I have something that you maybe interested in knowing and useful for others.

The make files correspond to what platform your targeting the build not which compiler your using to build it with (of-course certain combinations won't make much sense e.g. targeting VC 7.1 using VC 6.0 to build), there-for you can make a build of STLport for VC 6.0 with VC 7.1 compiler but you use vc6.mak file to build STLport to work on VC 6.0.

I did some investigation, I have VC++ 7.1 and have made a build with it for VC++ 6.0 in the past, but my version is not the toolkit version, so I downloaded the toolkit version and I found that it does not come with nmake by default, your first attempt was actually using VC++ 6.0's version of nmake you where trying to make a build of STLport for 7.1 using VC++ 6.0's version of nmake, we all know that 6.0 < 7.1 standard compliancy so it was probably trying to build something that VC++ 6.0 can't handle.

You can how-ever get a version of nmake which is a newer version (7.10.2240.8) than the one that comes with VC++ 6.0, it’s in the Microsoft Platform SDK which is free to download, there-for you *should* be able to make a build of STLport using VC++ toolkit 2003.
