Hello, I have been experimenting with the OggSPI. I was wondering this would be bad for short sound effects in games. Does it take a lot of resources? Should I just stick with wav or au? or does wav and au use a comprable amount of resources? Here is the url for the project: http://www.javazoom.net/vorbisspi/vorbisspi.html Pretty much I just think it would be cool to use ogg but i don't know if it will cut performence a ton or not. -pinkey

I think that generally people tend to use just plain uncompressed waves for short sound effects and then use compression and/or MIDI-like sound for music. There's no rule that says you can't use compression for short effects, but usually, with how short the effects are, there isn't much disadvantage to using uncompressed waves. Of course, using compressed sound for anything instead of uncompressed will require a little more processing, but usually this is trivial when compared with all the other stuff going on in the game. If you need every CPU cycle you can get, use uncompressed - if not, it probably won't matter a whole lot.

EDIT: I haven't done much with the Ogg format, but from what I've heard, its decompression is fairly easy on processors. Don't take my word for it without a second opinion though.
