1.)You remember, resident evil, the film and the game. The zombies walk around TOGETHER and when they see humans, they go feast. Yum. Now,..why arent the zombies feasting on each other? How can they tell each other apart? I mean,..if you pretended to be one of them walking all sluggishly, how would they figure you were not a zombie? 2.) Is there some smell pigment in the G/T-virues? 3.)And even then,..surely you'd smell of it too after a few hours with them in the hive/ police station/whatever? 4.)Also, why dont they eat each other (the game would be easier if they did but,..). Dont they like the taste of their own flesh? question number 5: do you think it would be cool if they actually did try to eat each other in the game? This could create fun things to watch such as rival zombie gangs. Or imagine if there were lots of zombies in a room fighting each other and you crept past them stealthily ( MGS Those are just simple examples, imagine the possibilities. It sure would be something new to the franchise(I saw the review for resi 4 on GC.i dont understand how it keeps getting high scores. Not that im saying it doesnt deserve it but i cant figure out if they added anything new, and i dont have a GC to go find out.) Ponder. dont flame me for this)

They did this in Sean of the Dead and it worked for them.

There's no one set definition of Zombies, but the consensus is that they rely on some form of sensory smell function to track prey, their eyes are next to useless but their hearing is functional enough to allow them to be drawn to sounds.

Zombies are only drawn by live flesh. They're not 'eating' out of hunger, they're following their basic instincts which instruct them to feed, meaning Zombies don't hunt for pleasure. They don't 'taste' their food, again it's the natural instinct they're following. Dead flesh isn't 'food' so they don't hunt each other.

Perhaps the new addition to the Zombie concept is the one brought in recently by Hollywood to make Zombies faster and smarter; this makes them more of a threat to the people and will make the films/game scarier. To be fair to alot of old Zombie films, the way Zombies take over the earth is a little unbelieveable being that they walk so slowly and are stupid, it doesn't make much sense for people just to stand there and be killed. The new addition is fairly revolutional in that respect; although some films have used this concept in the past it's only now that fast, intelligent, scary Zombies are becoming more mainstream.

I'm thinking a game that follows this style of Zombie would be pretty interesting.

Dead flesh isnt food

Myself i prefer my flesh dead. Still, how can they tell which flesh is alive and which isnt. Their sight is messed up like you said and its not like you can 'see' the life in flesh,..except for blood stains,..which a surviving character thats been fighting to live in a zombie world scenario would be likely to possess anyway.
if they are acting on their instict to feed,..what is telling them to "prefer" live flesh,..as i count dead flesh as food too.
The sound thing gives me an idea,..maybe they can hear heartbeats. But still what logic tells them that "the sound of hearts == food?"

Funny how no one has real answers.
I guess we've been decieved for years,..zombies SHOULD eat each other.

PLUS: even if there WAS a way they told each other apart. I think they would still fight each other if only as a result of competition for the scarce human prey.
question number 6: The reapers. I think thats what you call em,..its been years since i played resi sorry. BUT,..they used to hang from the ceiling like spiderman. How does being a mutated undead dude help you hang from the ceiling?
How sticky can your fingers be?

I'm on a roll. CAPCOM wont like me.

Zombies are predators not scanvengers so that means they like to kill their food before they eat it.

As evidenced in "Shaun of the Dead", which I am not entirely certain fits into the Zombie Canon, simply acting like the Zombies will keep the Zombies from eating you.

My own personal theory is this:

Zombies are dead. Duh. But they are animate, and have brain function(or else the "shooting them in the head" and/or "bashing in their heads with a cricket bat" method would not work to kill them). However, this brain function is greatly diminished as compared to their former living selves, and instead of the Id, Ego, Super Ego structure, they simply have the Id, and their motor control is impaired, and thus they walk awkwardly.

While the Zombies' mental capacity is diminished, they still want food that Tastes Good. Other Zombies are putrid if not fresh, so the safe bet for a Zombie to make is that other Zombies are Not Fresh, and therefore to be avoided. This is a "no brainer".

Human beings are Deliciously Fresh, and therefore Good To Eat. In addition, they tend to run around and scream, which easily differentiates them from Zombies.

To recap:

1) Fresh Humans Taste Good(to a Zombie)

2) Unfresh Zombies Taste Bad(to a Zombie)

3) To be safe, one must assume that a Zombie is Not Fresh.

4) Zombies have a Deminished Mental Capacity

5) Humans and Zombies are easy to tell apart, even for Mentally Deficient Zombies.

6) Zombies tend not to eat one another because they Taste Yucky, especially when Tasty Humans are available as an alternative.

7) Zombies may eat each other when no Humans can be found, but no Human would witness this because if the Human were there, they would not eat each other.

ZOMFIES are really clever, despite their apparent slow-wittedness. They are also really agile. Err... Their just tricking you into thinking that their slow.

In the movie, they don't eat each other because they aren't cannibals. They can detect the t-virus infection, and know not to eat their own kind. Very few animals will attack themselves for food, so there's no reason to expect zombies to.

RE:A made all this pretty clear. Angie managed to survive in a school filled with zombie children without so much as a scratch, and when she meets Alice they both recognize the infection in the other, as well as in Olivera. From there its pretty easy to connect the dots.

In Dawn of the Dead [the remake], the zombies are clearly aware of what types of food they do and do not like, as is made evident by the fact that they ignore the dog. Having established that their intelligence is sufficient to be picky eaters, its not hard to figure out why they wouldn't turn on themselves.

In Shawn of the Dead, as has been mentioned, they are just stupid.

In all other movies, I assume body temperature is the deciding factor. That, and noise. Being slow moving, zombies don't make much noise, so they aren't even aware of each others existance most of the time. When they are aware, their flesh is cold, and they are hunting warm meat. So they don't even see each other as a meal.

There is always one thing I would love to see in a resident evil style game.

At the very start you are in a very dank and dark hallway, somewhere there is not much room, and you run into perhaps the third or fourth zombie so far. It slowly makes its way to you, arms out, dragging its feet. Then, as it gets to about 5 steps away, it screams at the top of its lungs (similar to those bloody ghost flash animations, but not so much that it gets annoying) and without warning leaps at the player, and is almost instantly on top of them.

I think that because it is the last thing you are expecting it would work quite well. Maybe have it so that only 4 or 5 zombies in the whole game do this, so that it keeps the player guessing. As an alternative, a ghost could burst from the zombie and rush at the player too.

I can't remember what movie it was in which the zombies were eating a victim, and then stopped - and the victim rose as a partially dismembered zombie. Zombie Canon, however, is highly inconsistent; in Night of the Living Dead, it was repeatedly stated (and visually reinforced, such as in the end sequence where a straggly line advances which the viewer only realizes is humans when the camera descends to ground level) that zombies "appeared as normal people."

Suffice to say, every continuity has its own interpretation of the zombie that is, hopefully, internally consistent. Aside from Romero's movies, due to their historical cachet, my favorite are the zombies from 28 Days Later.

My two favorite Zombie populations come from Pirates of the Carribean (because they are Zombie PIRATES) and the Borg from Star Trek(because they are from OUTER SPACE).

If a Zombie population consisted wholly of PIRATES and also came from OUTER SPACE, it would replace them, because they would be Zombie Pirates from Outer Space.

No PIRATE would allow himself to become a zombie!

Ultimately, zombies are an allegory for society's compulsion for making its members into conforming unthinking sheep with no other goal than to support the status quo by suppression of rebellious free-thinking via subjugation of the self to the herd. That's why zombies don't attack other zombies.

I disagree on the grounds that there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

Zombies just want to get rid of the competition. That's all this is about.
