I'd like to see a list of all the best free software that's out there. You know, GNU-type stuff: Basic 2D image editing (like PSP) Photo editing (like Photoshop) 3D modelling (like 3D Studio Max) Sound editing (like SoundForge) And anything else... IDEs, video editing, web-design, database, security, anything. I'd like to see a detailed list of the best-of-the-free so I can decide what to buy and what to simply download. So if you have any opinions on free quality software, I'd like to look into it more and see what my options are. Thank you.

I read about a soundforge like program the other day but can't remember the name of it!

I'm sure google could find these products for you and then you could ask us specific questions!

You did ask for anything...

R - you'll never need a mathematical / statistical programming package again.

Textpad

Umm, while Textpad is the best multipurpose editor I ever used, it's not free at all. it's something like 24 USD or something. But it's well worth the money.

true, but that's for the full version - the demo is free. it's (imho) impossible to beat as a quick 'n dirty Java - or (and the reason i use it) HTML/CSS - editor.

Hmm, I think it's free for 30 days or something. After that it is theoretically illegal to use it without buying.
I use TextPad for all my programming stuff (hell, the entire EL code that I wrote is written in textpad), html editor, php editor, configuration editor, and I even write my articles in it :)

Sound editors for Linux. I don't know if you want linux software or not, but some of them are bound to have windows ports.

IDEs:
Anjuta
KDevelop
DevC++

video editing:
Cinelerra
LiVES

web-design:
Mozilla Composer
(I've heard there is some kind of standalone HTML editor in the works, similar to how Thunderbird arose from Mozilla Mail, and Firefox from Mozilla Navigator. Unfortunately, I can't remember its name.)

database:
PostgreSQL
MySQL
GnomeDB (graphical database frontend)

I second Audacity...not too many features but quite powerful for what's out there in f/oss.

Check the stickies in the Music & Sound and the Visual Arts forums, some kind people have crafted exhaustive lists of software, indicating the prices and licenses too.

I dont know what you would ever buy Micrsoft Office knowing that Open Office is out there... and thats it free, and that it can save as Microsoft word docs. [smile]

its not an ide but its free
abiword

abiword sucks and is broken (unless it was just my university's install)...

My vote is for gVim, or BBEdit (AFAIK BBEdit is still Mac-only).

And for free (ok, shareware) 2d graphic editing, I must say I love GraphicConverter to pieces. (Just wish it could paste transparently.)

There's quite a difference in quality and stability between the two [grin]
I'd say Microsoft Office was well worth the price.
