Being more persistant?

Ok, I got little problem with myself. I'm getting lazy everytime I tell myself to do things. For instance, the time I shell out for meditation at this point is none. Even though I like meditation, esp. right before I go to bed, I always end up after a 2 or 3 weeks skipping my sessions and then in the end, never doing them at all. This is also seen in other things I do, such as doing some administrative things, finding a job, paying some bills, etc. Last sunday I made a list of things I HAD to do, and I did they. I postponed a few things because something else came in the middle. And today, I didn't do shit. Any ideas on getting a bit more persistant in things, because I'm personally getting a bit tired of myself now. Toolmaker

I know how you feel. I think it's best to just keep up with what you need to do, maybe get someone close to you (ie. living in the same house as you) to help you keep up with it. It's like your mother asking you to do the driveway or laundry or something to that effect and keeping on bugging until you do it- it was annoying then, but now you're happy because you can do things immediately as they come into your mind.

I find the more things I do that I didn't want to do, the happier I am. If someone asks you to help them out with something and you're not doing anything, by all means, help them. Shovel the driveway when asked, etc. This way things tend to not eat away at you because as soon as they come into play they're done, for the things that can't be done right away, keep a todo list or a whiteboard or something. I hope I got my point across.

i suggest the impossible: stop visiting gamedev. will probably have quite some effect.

I'm guilty of being lazy too. The only solution I know of is to force yourself to get out and get things done.

Whenever you get in that mindset of "Oh, I'll just do it later" snap out of it.

Other than that, I'm afraid I can be of little help. If you need any negative reinforcement though, I'll be happy send you nasty e-mails when you don't get your shit done.

That would be a brilliant idea for an e-Business! [grin]

Hrmm... If you could do all kinds of messaging (ie AOL IM, ICQ, MSN, ..., e-mail, IRC, 'net send', cell phone voice-gen and text messages, etc) I'd bet you cuild have quite an e-business.
I wonder how many people would use the cell voice-gen call just to get out of meetings and that kind of thing.

I just pretend you didn't say that, because you "paint" Dutch people like they're stoned all day.

It doesn't even have to do with gamedev. It's basicly with everything in my life.

As for Mercury: You're right, because I do cook twice a week for a family of 4(Voluntarily, but my mom still accounts on the fact there is dinner at ~17:45 on monday). Also, if I force myself to clean my room, it's not as bas a I initially thought it was, and when I'm done, I so feel happy(Probably because of the dust is out).

Perhaps I should work on my meditation habit, and perhaps deep it out a bit, and perhaps meditate on the fact I should stop being lazy. And that does work btw. Also, meditation makes you more relaxed in life [cool]

Yeah, but I was clearly joking.

You'd know that if you put your wooden shoes on and came out of your windmill every once in awhile.

everytime you don't do what you're supposed to do, hit yourself in the face (just a slap, no head-butting walls). Or get doogle to do it for you (since you're so lazy).

Seriously, something like that. You know it's a bad attitude to have, punish yourself one way or another.

I'm as guilty as you are. The weird thing is, it's not doing it, it's starting it. When you think about it, those things take only a few minutes of your time (like cleaning, brushing your teeths, pay the bills, sort out the trash, do the laundry, washing up, clean the car/bike/bicycle, call mum takes a bit longer). So really, it's quite a pathetic attitude. When cleaning or doing menial tasks, I usually put some music in the background to alleviate the boredom of the task and keep the brain buzzing, that also helps.

Another thing I would like to suggest is to have a lot of hobbies, be in the middle of a lot of things at once. Read a few books, for instance. Do some drawings, whether your good at art or not, give it time and you'll be able to do it. Learn a new program and make some stuff with it. Pick up an instrument. Just don't code day in and day out and do nothing else, or you'll be begging for more out of your life, and I think that's what you're doing right now. I know I've had that feeling a lot, and many of us have. If you get bored doing one thing, by all means, don't continue doing it, that's a good way to burn yourself out. Do something completely different. [smile]

Last post before meditation and bedness.

It are mostly those dumb jobs that take 5 or 10 minutes indeed. But there is the hard part ;). Being lazy is so much easier. So, I'm going to try and break my habit. Perhaps I shouldn't work with a punishment system, but with a reward system. Such as: Clean your room, then you can play a game or write some code, etc.

Well, I'm now off for relaxation and immediatly shuteye. For tomorrow I need to:
- Pick up some paper from the town hall
- Make new pass photos
- Subscribe to a gym(43 euros for 3 months, cheap++)
- Study a bit
- Pay out paypal monies
- Pay a bill

We'll see how far I get.
