I am writing a fingerprint recongition program and want to normalise the image so that i standardise the intensity values of the pixels by adjusting the range of the grey-level values so that they they lie within a desired range of values. i want to do this because i want to contrast between the ridge and valleys in the image. But i dont really know how to do it. Any suggesting or code example would be great thanks in advance ructions

You find the maximum and minimum values. Then for each pixel value, you substract the minimum value and then divide it by the difference between the maximum and the minimum.

3 6 4 => 0 3 1 => 0 1 0.333...

If you want it on range 0-255, then multiply by 255. If you don't want to use floating point numbers, multiply by 255 before the division.
