So I went down to a store to buy my new Averatec laptop, after research on prices. I ask for the thing and they bring it. The box looked opened, but they guaranteed me that they just opened it to verify it's contents. I was skeptical, but I decided I would get it, and check it at home. Afterall, I can bring it back. So I get it home and open it up. It looks like it may be a return, based on the internal packaging. I turn the thing on, expecting the windows xp setup screen. Nope. It goes to the login screen, with a username "Sams 6653" and a password I dont know. Since the place I got it from is Sams club, it is obvious this thing is a display model! And I paid retail price. The keyboard is dirty, screen scratched in one place, and the black doesnt look so great around the edges. It usually takes a while and some abuse for that to happen (in my experience). I was prepared for this, but it is still annoying. If your wondering why I didnt ask for an unopened box, it is because this was the only one. Cant wait to take it back tomorrow and be annoyed at them.

Agh, that's dirty.
But what I don't understand is why you're buying an assembled computer from a store- Sam's Club no less. It's cheaper and more fun to build your own computer. I think if I were to get a new computer, either I'd just add on to this until I was happy, or I'd get a hawt Alienware beast. (If I were rich)

Lemme guess, you bought it for the warranty? That's the only thing stopping me from building my computer, cna't convince my dad that a home-built computer is way better than one preassembled with a warranty.

[EDIT]: Never mind, laptop...could be a fun challenge if you're up to it.

Building a laptop is a bit harder though ...

That sucks. Just take it back.

If you don't go there often, you can try the "bitch until they order me a new/better one for free" tactic, but be warned: it can backfire. They do reserve the right to refund your money and tell you to bugger off. Good luck!

That happend to us a few years back. We bought a Packard Bell desktop from Wal-Mart that was in fact a display model, and as such was useless. (We didn't know at this time that it could be cleaned up, and we could install a new operating system.)

I knew one girl who bought a computer that had Linux installed. :(

Well they typically have a decent return policy. I will also make them give me a good deal for an actually new one. If not I will just use amazon. It may be like buck cheaper there.
