MSDN Problems

For about a week or so now my local installation of MSDN has had trouble loading certain pages, returning DNS errors and the ever-classic "This page cannot be displayed". The weird thing is that some times certain pages will work, and then two minutes later refuse to load. There also doesn't appear to be any sort of rhyme or reason to this - it's basically random which pages load and which pages don't, and when. It's getting extremely frustrating to look up simple pieces of information on MSDN because I practically have to go online for almost everything I try to look up. The problem happens whether I'm using the browser through MSVC, or if I load the documentation externally through dexplorer. It doesn't make any sense to me, because the entire installation is local, worked for almost a year, and suddenly decides it won't load random pages. Sometimes I can press the refresh button and it loads, but most of the time that doesn't work. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm kind of in a bind because my MSDN CD is across the country and I can't reinstall it. It's annoying as all hell.

Knackered hard drive? It may be worth running chkdsk C: /R (Where C is the drive with MSDN installed). Or try copying the help files to somewhere else on your hard drive, and viewing them from there to see if that helps.

go to your admin control panel, computer management and check disk fragmentation.

if it's only just happened it could be a spyware infection that's hijacking all your browser activity, redirecting it somewhere else first and thats why u get the dns page.

Something like "adaware" may help, but use caution :-)

There's definitely nothing wrong with my hard drive, and my computer is virus/spyware protected up the wazoo with Adaware, Spybot, ZoneAlarm, and Symantec AV Corporate Edition. Believe me I like to keep this beauty perfect [grin]

But something even weirder just happened. I went online and learned a little about MS Help 2, and simply by virtue of opening a bunch of the help files (*.HxC, *.HxS, etc.) and mucking around, things seemed to have fixed themselves. I've been randomly jumping around the documentation for about 10 minutes and I haven't had any more problems. It's too strange, I think I'll just leave it the way it is for now [looksaround]

One other thing I did do was a disk cleanup. Don't know if that might have affected anything.
