I get annoyed when people say things such as it's gross that they eat dog meat in some Asian countries. I don't see any difference between eating a dog or cat or cow. Now, I did grow up without any pets and was vegetarian, though I eat meat now. When my friend's dog was lying on the ground, I could see the shape of her leg muscles and thought it looked tasty. So, do you think it's gross to eat an animal that could be a pet?

The other day (yesterday?) I dreamed I was in a restaurant with a girl and I ordered dog (probably joking). The waiter asked me which part I wanted. I said I never had eaten dog before and I asked him to choose for me the best part. The waiter advised me to eat it with some sauce because the taste was quite strong...

weird isn't?

Do it all the time. For some people cows, horses or pigs are pets. As long as it isn't someone pet, why shouldn't it be catagorised as food ? Personally i'd love to eat some piece of dog some day - unfortunatly i believe it's illegal here so i basicly would have to go to asia to taste some [sad] [smile]

Yeah, I think it would be wrong to eat cat, dog, horse where I live, because they are pets. I don't think I could raise an animal to kill it either. If you name it you shouldn't eat it ;)

One of my friends(a vet) went to a pet shop to buy the meat for a dinner party.

She slaughtered the guinea pig herself. It was very nice by all accounts.

However there is an ecological reason not to eat dogs/cats or any other carnivore, in that it's very inefficient. How many cows does a dog get through in its life? Probably quite a few. Wouldn't it be far more efficient to eat the cows instead. Having said that eating meat at all is inefficient. Why not use the resources to grow crops.

But as for laws to cover eating pets, I believe in the UK there are ones applying to dogs, cats and horses. I don't think I would kill or prepare from scratch a guinea pig, as my sister keeps them. We did roast duck last night, and handling it's giblets wasn't exactly my idea of fun. It was worth it though!

It's gross to say "eat a pet", because that means you feel something for the animal. We distance ourselves from our meat, most of us don't have to slaughter animals to get meat. Although dog is just another animal, it has enormously different connotations to something like "cattle" or "pig." The former's place in society mean that people attach themselves to dogs and relate to them, while the others are just farm animals. But yes, the intelligence of a dog or pig might make it more repulsive to eat.

I agree with the above; as long as it isn't someone's pet it's okay to eat, provided you slaughter it humanely. My mom has eaten dog before in Vietnam and I see nothing wrong with it. I've also had pet chickens even though I eat chicken.

Dude, dogs eat shit and rotten crap. There stomachs and immune system are much different from ours. They still will have tastey meat on them no matter what kind of crap they eat. So it makes plenty of sense why dogs are eaten in poor places. The dogs clean up the trash, and then people get to eat the dogs!

If people had to personally slaughter all the meat they ate, there'd be many more vegetarians. Not only due to sympathy, but also because it's just so gross.

Fair enough in places where dogs practically feed themselves. But in the UK at least, you would have to feed them up to a certain standard, as you do all other animals. Farming carnivores in this country is not ecologically sound.

As for that pic of skinned dogs, it's no worse than a picture of a cow, or chicken. And our family has had a pet dog before.

If that were the case, we'd have never started eating meat in the first place. Remember, butchers are a fairly recent invention.

As for eating your friend's pet, of course there's something wrong with that. Its your friend's pet. Presumably, you wouldn't eat your friend's siblings? Its the same thing. Cannibalism aside, its just impolite.

Eating your pet is wrong. Even Homer Simpson cried when he ate Pinchy (his pet lobster).

Its no more wrong to eat any animal than any other. Nor is it more right to eat a vegatable. Plants are alive too. I am a vegetarian, and this is just my opinion. If I ever run across proof to my convictions I will post. Yeah, thats likely...

I suppose what would make it wrong is if you actually ate someone elses pet dog. Or pet spinach :P

As for cannabilism, I cannot personally view it as right. It just doesnt seem right to me. I suppose eating your naturally dead may be ok, although I hear eating human can cause medical problems. I dont think it is something I would willingly do.

Hey, I didn't say "if people had to personally slaughter...or starve." If you have to hunt to survive, you'll do it.

Speaking of cannibalism, humans would even resort to that level of impoliteness when hungry enough. That doesn't make it okay.

I in all truth almost vomited when I saw that episode. The idea of eating your pet just made me more ill than I ever would have thought it would.

Anyway I really don't see the diff. If your are going to eat meat then you cant really go around grading the worthiness of the source ethicly. Barring canibalisim if you eat meat you eat meat. If the source is cute or not shouldn't be the diffining factor. Nor should the fact of it being or not being someones pet. It having a bond with a human dosn't change its value any. Just because because an orphan dosn't belong to anyone dosn't mean its OK for me to knock them around and steal there candy. It wrong to treat someone like that or it isn't. Its wrong to eat meat or it isn't.

For the record I munch the beef all the time. Porks good stuff too. If I really had to try and reason the OKness of eating meat I'm not sure I could do it. But then I would starve making it them or me. So sorry to the furry little critters of the world but I chose me and try not to think about it.

Intelligence seems to be a factor in regards to "taste" (at least in many cultures). The smarter it is, (more endearing as well) the less likely it is to be eaten. This is why I think the western culture has problems with dogs/cats being eaten, though pigs are supposedly smart.

Empathy though, seems to play a big role...dogs and cats seem to offer their owners empathy, which in the western world makes them taboo to eat, by principle.

Animals still die for the vegetarians, just the vegetarians let the bodies rot instead of eating them. That is efficiency. (Unless you farm your own food)

Well, If I ever eat dog (not likely), I won't be eating it's head, that's for sure. Jews eats pigs head tough...
