I wanted to see if my friend could access my dvd player on my laptop over a hub. His system said that it couldn't find the dvd decoder which I figured was no big deal until I tried to play a dvd my self and my laptop said the same thing... I have been searching for about an hour but I can't figure out what the problem is and or how I can even get the drivers I need... I have an HP omnibook xe4100 with an sqi dvd rom sdr-083... please help me figure out how to fix this. thank you.

out of the box windows does not have a codec available that can DeCSS ( unecrypt DVD video ) the video streams (VOB's) from a DVD. You will need a third party product like PowerDVD/WinDVD or similar to play the DVD's. I'm suprised the omnibook didn't get bundled with one of these products, is your DVD drive external?

Edit: damn beaten again ... thanx for the link though PnP bios nice to know there are free DVD codecs for available for windows boxen.

It was working fine until the other day when my friend tired to access it over the hub. Windows media player disabled the play dvd/cd option as well. I dk what the hell is going on. Ive restarted it and have even tried to roll back to a previous restore and nothing. :( Im going to try windvd and such and do a search for the codec right now. wish me luck ;)

This includes a free software decoder. I'm not sure how legal it is in the US, but it works perfectly and all you need is a DVD-ROM.
